5 Toxins Found In Your Shower Products And Cosmetics
Have you been taking all the precautions to eat right? Have you been avoiding toxic chemicals like BPA (Bisphenol-A) that is present in canned food and containers that store food? Very good! But do you know that there are toxins that enter your body while you have your bath or when you apply skin care and make up products?
You can be affecting your skin and hair with chemicals that are hormone disrupting. There also may be other toxins that are linked to cancer and other diseases. So what should you be doing? You should be reading the list of ingredients of your bathing and skin care products carefully. Bathing products to be carefully examined include your shower gel, shampoo, conditioner etc. The same goes for your skin care and cosmetic products.
Here is a list of specific chemicals that you should avoid:
1) DEA (Diethanolamine), TEA (Triethanolamine), MEA (Monoethanolamine)
The three chemicals DEA (Diethanolamine), TEA (Triethanolamine), MEA (Monoethanolamine) can form cancer causing agents and disrupt hormonal balance. These chemicals are usually found in soaps, bubble baths, shampoos, and facial cleansers.
2) Phthalates and Parabens
Phthalates and parabens are a group of chemicals that are commonly used in cosmetics and pharmaceuticals as preservatives. They are added to cosmetics like nail paints and perfumes to keep bacteria and fungus away. They are also added to hair sprays to keep them sticky. The European union has banned these chemicals. Both phthalates and parabens are known to be carcinogenic and linked to breast cancer. Now, will you think twice before using your cosmetics? You just need to be sure that your bran of cosmetics has no phthalates and parabens in them.
Fragrance is a term that refers to 4000 different ingredients. Fragrances are mostly synthetic and are either toxic or cancer causing. Most products that we use in our everyday life contain fragrance in them. The list includes shampoos, sunscreens, deos, products for skin care and body care. If you have the habit of reading labels you would have spotted the term ‘fragrances’ in the ingredient list. Now, you should make it a point to read the ingredients list.
The chemical Quarternium-15 is commonly known to cause dermatitis and allergic reactions. It is known to break down into formaldehyde. This particular chemical is used as a preservative in several products that are meant for skin and hair care.
The chemical triclosan is an antibacterial that falls in the synthetic category. This ingredient is added to disinfectant gels and soaps. It has been registered as a pesticide by the Environmental Protection Agency. It has been found to be highly toxic to any living being. It belongs to the class of cancer causing chemicals. Triclosan is known to affect hormones, hamper sexual function, affect fertility and can also cause birth defects.
What should be done?
You can’t just avoid using personal care products altogether. Read labels to find out what is in your shampoo, conditioner, soap, skin care products or cosmetics. Go in for trusted brands that don’t use harmful chemicals. You can altogether stay away from these chemicals by shifting to natural skin care and personal care products. But please do read labels as even ‘natural’ products contain tons of chemicals. You can replace chemical loaded scrubs with natural homemade scrubs. A paste of rice flour and curd will work as good as any other scrub in the market. This is just one example, you can swap chemical products with chemical free ones!
