The diet world has a lot of things that are weird! One such weird thing is a low fat diet. It is good to be conscious about your fat intake but what happens when you go overboard? You are risking your health!

1. Poor absorption of vitamins

Vitamins A, D, E and K are fat soluble vitamins. So, your body needs dietary fat to make use of them. If you happen to eat a diet too low in fat it can affect the absorption of the fat soluble vitamins. These vitamins are stored in the liver and fat tissue. They are essential for blood clotting, cell repair, growth and immunity. Insufficient intake of fat can result in a deficiency of the fat-soluble vitamins.

2. Depression

A low fat diet (low in fatty acids in particular) can affect mental health. Omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids play vital roles in relation with behavior and mood. They are linked to the production of many hormones and chemicals in the brain. Low fatty acid intake is linked to symptoms of depression. Fatty acids also help nerve cells to communicate with each other. People having a deficiency of omega 3 can suffer from mental disorders.

3. Increased risk of cancer

Low intake of the essential fatty acids is linked with risks of colon, prostate and breast cancer. So, if you don’t consume healthy fats you might increase your risk of cancer.

4. High cholesterol and heart disease

When your diet is very low in fat, the level of good cholesterol i.e. HDL drops down. HDL should be high to protect you from heart disease. What HDL does is that it collects bad cholesterol from the blood and sends it over to the liver to be excreted. When the HDL-LDL ratios are not balanced and when LDL is too high there is an increased risk of heart disease. Omega 3s are essential for elevating HDL and for protecting the heart.

5. Imbalance of Nutrients

Elimination of fat from the diet means that you are eating more carbs and proteins. This imbalance in diet can trigger several health problems. A diet high in carbs can increase the chances of developing type 2 diabetes. On the other hand a diet high in protein can increase the risk of osteoporosis. To ward off diseases you need to eat a balanced diet that includes all the three vital macronutrients namely- fat, carbs and protein.

Always going in for the fat free version rather than the original version of the food can put you in deep trouble. The low-fat and fat-free processed foods have added sugars to make them tastier. The number of calories in them are similar to the original version of the food. People usually tend to think that the fat-free foods are healthy that is why such foods are overeaten.

Having fat in your food is essential to bring in the flavour and also provide a feeling of fullness. This keeps you full for longer and you won’t be ravenous at your next meal.
The main point is to include healthy fats in your diet and your sources can be olive oil, almonds, tuna, salmon and flax seeds. Trans-fat and saturated fats should be limited.

  1. If i want to eat cheese / butter, y should i go for low-fat ? i will control portions (Kanan way) and eat it happily..
    It is frustrating when people believe in these zero-cal, zero-sugar gimmicks…
