Digestive biscuits have been around for a quite a while and find their place easily on a plate accompanying a cup of tea! Most people start their day with a couple of digestive biscuits. They came into being in the 19th century. The term ‘digestive’ in their name makes people think that they help in digestion. Right from the beginning they have been advertised as a digestive aid, most probably because they have a large amount of baking soda in them. Though not advised by doctors, most people mix minute amounts of baking soda with water to get relief from symptoms of heart burn. However, when you eat baking soda in a biscuit, you can’t get the same results. Due to the heat the chemical structure of baking soda alters, it loses carbon dioxide at 200 degrees F and the baking powder turns into sodium carbonate, which is a completely different compound. It doesn’t have the benefits of sodium bicarbonate.
You can find digestive biscuits in many different varieties apart from the regular variety. Regular digestive biscuits are made up of coarse whole-meal wheat flour with added sugar and salt. This way these are placed in the semi-sweet baked goods category.
You get chocolate digestive biscuits and also fat reduced ones. The fat reduced digestives are named so because they have 25% less fat than regular digestives. And you know anything from which fat has been removed will have something or other added to it that is unhealthy. This is done to make up for the lost taste. Fat reduced digestive biscuits contain extra sugar in the form of glucose-fructose syrup to make up for the reduced fat!
Digestive biscuits- Ingredients and nutritional value
Digestive biscuits do not contain yeast but contain leaveners like how cookies, muffins and pancakes do. All the types of digestive biscuits use baking soda as their leavening agent but their ingredients and nutritional values differ. The simplest ingredient makeup is that of regular digestives. They contain wheat flour, vegetable oil, sugar, leavening agents and powdered non-fat milk that helps them get brown while baking.
Chocolate digestives contain various fats including palm oil. Reduced fat digestives, as mentioned earlier, have lots of sugar added to them to make up for the missing fat.
Talking about the nutritional value, digestives don’t seem to be good in the macronutrient part. One digestive biscuit (regular) has 73 calories with 2.6 g of simple sugars, 3.2 g of fat (hydrogenated) and sodium that, when consumed along with a cup of tea is equivalent with a bag of potato chips!

Now, do you feel that having a digestive biscuit along with your tea is healthy? There are so many short comings of digestive biscuits that they just cannot be a part of a healthy diet. The nutrients you get for the calories are just not worth it. If you plan to eat clean then you should not include digestive biscuits in your diet. However, if your daily diet plan has a space for a few calories then you can indulge in a few of these biscuits to satisfy your sugar cravings.
