Many people will make faces on seeing the title of this post and a few will say yumm! Well, it is khichdi, you may either hate it or like it but you just can’t ignore it. Just like how chicken soup is for the Western world, khichdi is for Indians, am I right? Do you like khichdi or make faces at it like how kids do? Well, after reading its benefits I bet you are going to include it in your weekly menu and improvise on it to suit your taste.

Benefits of eating Khichdi- the comfort food

It is usually eaten when a person is ill, has an upset tummy or wants to have a light but filling comfort food. In every kitchen in India makes khichdi though the taste and style of cooking may vary from one household to another. Basically khichdi is made from rice and split moong dal. Usually ghee is added on top for flavour. It is known to soothe the digestive system. Let us find out more about the humble and modest khichdi!

A wholesome meal

Khichdi has a good balance of carbs and protein. Moong dal offers vitamin C, magnesium, calcium, potassium, and phosphorous. It has the 10 essential amino acids, making it a complete source of protein. Hot khichdi can be eaten with pure cow’s ghee. Doing so will make it a food that provides the right amount of macronutrients: complex carbs, protein and fat. If you happen to veggies to it, it becomes a complete meal.

It is gluten-free

The term gluten-free is heard a lot these days as more and more people are turning out to be sensitive to gluten or suffering from celiac disease. Such people can’t process gluten, which is a protein present in grains like wheat, barley and rye. However, such people can eat khichdi as it is gluten free and is packed with nutrition. Other who don’t have a problem from gluten but want to lead a gluten free lifestyle can also opt for the evergreen khichdi.

Khichdi can practically be served at any time of the day. It possesses the ability to detoxify the body and balance the 3 doshas- Vatta, Pitta, Kapha. It is a staple food of an Ayurvedic diet as it is a tridoshic food that has a calming effect on the body. Khichdi- the nourishing dish of rice, moong dal, salt, haldi and ghee increases energy and immunity.

Khichdi is easy to digest

Khichdi soothes the intestine and helps in treating an upset stomach when eaten with curd. It is in particular good for little babies and the elderly as they have a slow metabolism and the digestive strength is less too. Khichdi is easy to digest for them.

Khichdi is made quite often at my home. We make khichdi of different dals so that there is a variety and we don’t get bored of it. Every house has a different way of cooking khichdi but the aim is the same! I have it mostly in my dinner to keep it light. It is a comfort food and shall always remain one.

  1. i make khichdi only with moong dal and veggies.. 🙂 dunno if v can call it khichdi, but i follow the same method i use for making rice khichdi.
