Lets begin with the first post of this series –

Coffee contains caffeine. Caffeine is known to be the most common psychoactive element in the world. It is one of the few elements that is widely used in fat burners. This is because Caffeine helps to mobilize fats from the fat tissues and increase metabolism.

Coffee Can Increase The Metabolic Rate

Metabolism has an important role in weight management. The higher our metabolic rate, more we can eat without gaining weight. Read about ways to boost metabolism hereΒ and here.

Caffeine can increase your metabolic rate by 3-11% with normal dose. And now the icing on the cake – the metabolism increase by caffeine is due to burning of fat πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ !

Caffeine however works different for different people. The fat burning in obese people is less ie app 10% whereas in lean people, it is more ie. app 30 %. Similarly, fat burning with caffeine is more in young people as compared to elderly folks.

Coffee Can mobilize fat

Till now we learnt that caffeine stimulates the nervous system. This sends signals to the fat cells to break down fat. Caffeine also increases a hormone called Adrenaline in your blood. Adrenaline flows to fat tissues through blood and signals to break fat and release it in blood. That is how caffeine can mobilize fat from your fat cells !

Coffee Contains Best Stimulants

Coffee contains caffeine as mentioned above. Caffeine works as a nervous system stimulant; it blocks neurotransmitter called Adenosine. When adenosine is blocked,

  • Neurons firing is increased
  • Dopamine and Norepinephrine are released. Dopamine is produced my brain to make you feel happy and good πŸ™‚

Chlorogenic Acid is another substance is coffee that causes slow absorption of carbs in body. That’s another reason why I am having cold coffee πŸ˜› .

Coffee and Weight Loss!

Β Now if you wish to have Coffee primarily for weight loss, here is the catch ! With continuous intake of coffee, you can become tolerant to it and so it stops working. In a short term, coffee peps up metabolic rate and cause fat burning, no doubt about that !

In the long run, even if fat burning by coffee becomes less, coffee can still act as hunger suppressant and reduce your appetite making you eat less. More hunger suppressants here.

My suggestion is to start with a lower dose of coffee and increase in with time. Then give a gap of few days and start afresh so that your body does not become used to it !

P. S – If you have high blood pressure, please avoid taking coffee. You can have tea instead. My mum complains of high pulse rate post coffee consumption.

  3. The best way to lose weight is with regular exercise and balanced diet. Just consuming caffeine for yhe the sake of weight loss is overkill. Caffeine leads to increase in body heat, is a diuretic (water loss) and is not recommended in pcos. Considering this it is best to stay away!

  4. Bhakti, I never said that coffee is an alternative to exercise and healthy diet. I am not sure if its recommended in PCOS or not. Otherwise, I don’t believe that you need to stay away from coffee.

    have a doubt as it advisable to take coffee or tea on an empty stomach soon after we get up. You know am a great Rujutha fan. she advises not to have coffee on emoty stomach but have it after eating some idli dosa upma bfast. after reading her book only, I stopped my bed coffee. but given a chance having a cup of coffee would be the most relaxing thing for me . but what aboiut ana’s tip of adding coconut oil in coffee ?

  9. Aayushi, that is true for all people. Caffeine disrupts sleep, that’s the reason tea n coffee are not advised post evening.
    I am used to tea at night and can sleep like a baby though πŸ˜€

  10. Sorry for the late reply!! but i can swear on coffee, after having a good cup of coffee my appetite is gone for easily 4-5hrs. and i always prefer coffee when i am having crazzy sugar cravings.
