Can You Lose Weight On Low Carb Vegetarian Diet?Caitlin Shares Her Weight Loss Story

Can You Lose Weight On Low Carb Vegetarian Diet

Hello Indian Weightloss Friends!

I would like to take a moment to introduce myself.  My name is Caitlin.  I am a twenty-nine year old woman from The United States who currently resides in tropical Florida.  Over the past five years I made it a priority to completely transform myself, mind and body.

These days I spend my time working towards a career in mental health counseling, taking several long runs a week, cooking fabulous fiancé-approved low carb vegetarian meals (whom, by the way, is a carb obsessed meat-eater!), and giving my furry babies lots of hugs and kisses. Life truly is good.  However, it wasn’t very long ago that my life was very bleak. And here in this dark time, my new friends, is where my journey began.

How Caitlin transformed

I do not post this lightly, and like I’m sure many of you, it absolutely terrifies me greatly to expose myself so fully to the world.  However, if just one person can benefit in any way from my story, it will be worth it. So, here it goes:

I lost 80 lbs doing low carbohydrate vegetarian. It took me three years, which ended up being awesome because I have zero stretch marks or loose skin from the weight loss, and it helped ensure that it became a lifestyle and not just a fad diet. In my early 20’s I was lost in a variety of ways: I was smoking and drinking excessively, dropped out of college, and I gained a massive amount of weight. One day, when the scale read 199, I decided I was tired of being miserable. I was tired of blaming others for the mess I had made of my life. Simultaneously I stopped smoking (with help from the Blu electronic cigarettes- I am now completely nicotine free, and have been for almost 5 years), started doing hardcore low carb, and applied to go back to school.

Three years later I was eighty pounds lighter, an avid runner (I ran my first half marathon!), and graduating Summa Cum Laude from an all girls private school. The first step was making the decision to change. I am now in maintaining mode, but I have the say- I enjoyed the journey. I learned a lot about myself, literally felt my body healing, and became so completely in touch with myself physically and mentally. It’s an amazing feeling.

I’d be lying if I said that there weren’t bumps in the road. I messed up countless times. I cried, a lot. I was angry sometimes, but I pressed on, and boy has it been worth it. I’ve never been so happy and healthy since I was a child. So, to all my new friends out there who feel a bit lost, whether because of your physical or mental health, or anything else-don’t give up.

You have the power to change your body, your mind, your life.

I am now at the point in my journey where I feel it is time to share the tools and knowledge I have accumulated over the years with others.  I decided to join the team at Indian Weight Loss Blog so that I could reach out beyond those people currently in my life, and hopefully help many others throughout the world with their own personal journeys of transformation.  I don’t pretend to have all the answers. But, I do know very well the feeling of hopelessness, and I also know that each and every one of you has the strength to take the very first step to a healthy, fulfilled life.  If I can do it, anyone can. Please follow me here at Indian Weight Loss Blog. It is my goal to pass along every last bit of advice I can about my experiences with low carb vegetarian weight loss, the evolution of my exercise routine, and of course my favorite recipes and products.  I look forward to hearing about all of your own journeys.

Safe travels, my new friends!

  1. Love you Caitlin and your weight loss journey. We would like to know more of your vegetarian WOE.. Please do share. There are so many of us here who need your guidance.

  2. You are an inspiration for a lot here, Caitlin! When I started low carbing veg, people told me vegetarians can’t pull off this lifestyle. I still went ahead and lost more than 20 pounds, still a long way to go. Sometimes I get demotivated since I don’t lose as fast as a non veggie would do, despite the effort I put in. But now I won’t , you are the perfect example that it works, yayyyy 🙂

  3. Oh My.. This is one heck of Transformation.. Caitlin, you are such a huge inspiration to everyone , to lose weight, maintain weight and most importantly, a healthy lifestyle..

I am so glad to be here.. 🙂

  4. Tarun if you are talking about Leslie Challenge then I am sorry to say no one updated including me 😛 though I completed the challenge… 🙂

  5. Thank you all so much! Support from people like you all really helped keep me motivated along the way! I will definitely be posting regularly… I want to share all my favorite recipes and my exercise plan.

  6. I completely understand your frustration with not losing as fast as meat eaters. However, I always try to look at the bright side of things (these days anyway! :), and I just look at it as a positive thing. The slower you lose weight the more likely it will become a lifestyle, and the more likely you won’t have negative side effects of rapid weight loss (stretch marks and saggy skin, and perhaps even heart issues!). And, in the long run, what is 3 years (how long it took me) in the scheme of things? Especially if it ensures you make it lifestyle! I’m excited for you though! The journey ended up not being just about weight loss for me, it taught me so so much more than I ever expected. Luckily you have a fabulous support system here at IWB! Including me! 🙂

  7. Love you too, Kanan! I has been lovely getting to know about your journey as well on Facebook! I will definitely be sharing all I possibly can!
