Cheese Does Not Raise Cholesterol – Research
Are you someone who can’t live a day without cheese? Cheesy sandwiches and pizzas make you drool? However, you have reduced your cheese intake for the fear of a rise in your cholesterol levels. Well, well, there is some good news for you!!!
A study that got published in the Nutrition and Diabetes journal states that individuals who eat a lot of cheese don’t usually have higher levels of cholesterol than people who don’t.
Cheese Does Not Raise Cholesterol
Scientists have found no link between cheese consumption and increase in body fat or high cholesterol i.e. LDL which is also called bad cholesterol. Excess LDL cholesterol can cause deposition of cholesterol on the artery walls that leads to a condition called atherosclerosis in which the arteries get hardened and start shrinking. It is the main risk factor for strokes and heart attacks. And you very well know so many people die of heart attacks all over the world each year.
Researchers studied the impact of consuming dairy products (around 291 g per day) such as milk, cheese, cream, butter and yogurt on markers for body fatness and health in 1,500 individuals (Irish) between the age of 18 and 90. The study has revealed some really positive effects of dairy consumption.
In fact, it has been found that a higher dairy intake is associated with a lower body mass index (BMI), lower body fat percentage and a lower waist size and blood pressure.
Individuals who consumed a lot of cheese were not having higher LDL cholesterol levels than those who ate smaller amounts of it or those who avoided it completely.
While studying the diets of the participants, researchers have found that people who regularly consumed low-fat milk and yogurt had higher intake of carbs. And as a surprise were found to have higher levels of the bad LDL cholesterol.
The study says that dairy products, milk and yogurt in particular can be consumed as a part of a well-balanced and healthy diet in order to maintain weight and contribute in keeping blood pressure and blood glucose levels in check.
The saturated fats present in dairy products, cheese in particular should be considered in the wider context of an individual’s diet, say the scientists. The lead author states that we need to consider not only the nutrients but also the matrix in which they are being eaten and what the dietary pattern is, so it is not only about the food but also about the pattern of other foods we consume with that as well.
Generally, a dietary intake of antioxidants such as vitamin E, vitamin C and beta-carotene present in fruits and veggies and omega 3 fatty acids can be helpful in limiting the build up of bad cholesterol on the walls of arteries. However, all kinds of meat, even lean meat are sources of cholesterol.
You can very well add cheese to your well-balanced and healthy diet. Make sure you don’t turn to eating junk food.
