A lack of knowledge about the food you eat makes you pick up the wrong stuff at stores and restaurants. Similarly, the most regular and ignored daily habits make us pick up weight at the drop of a hat. You might be running the mill endlessly at your gym and wondering why the scale still shows the same weight after a month. There were some endless diet mistakes I did for a long time in my life, because of which I looked bloated in spite of my desperate measures to lose weight. These were a few of those along with a valid explanation –

  1. I thought brown bread is a better alternative to white bread
A nutritionist friend busted my myth. What many people do not know is that white bread and brown bread are both made from refined flour (maida). Have multigrain or wholegrain bread instead as they are rich in dietary fibre.
  1. Ordering sandwiches and other such things with mayonnaise spread
Even when I was trying to be a saint by ordering grilled sandwiches, or ordering a sub at the subway, what I did not know was that a mayo means at least 300 calories (that’s more than three bread slices) from the spread itself. This I knew, when my svelte air hostess friend mocked me while I casually let the server put mayo in my humble sub. Go easy on the sauces when out of home. While preparing them yourself, a low fat curd dressing, mixed with spices and herbs, will give a creamy texture and more proteins. Load it with veggies, as much as you can, to add to the nutritional value of your food.
  1. I did not stop having soda based drinks
This Baba Ramdev told me while I was having a one way communication with him on television on a certain early morning. According to the guidelines, if you have to limit your calories to 2000 a day, it is equal to 25 grams of sugar. On the other hand, a twelve ounce can of Coca Cola contains 35 grams. Do the calculation yourself! Coke decreases the metabolism and helps in destroying the fat burning enzymes in no time. Have lime water sans sugar instead. Also, nothing can be better than a glass of warm water, especially after a workout session.
  1. I consumed most of my calories during the second half of the day
The old saying – ‘Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a pauper’ is golden. Yet we ignore it. In fact, those evening hours when we munch, not because we are hungry, but because we are bored, are the most dangerous. Have fruit in between 4 pm- 8pm, instead of other snacks. You can even have two marie biscuits with tea. Make sure you don’t snack after dinner.
  1. I would eat something within half an hour of a workout
After an intense workout, I would come back home hungry and binge on anything and everything that I would fancy. I polished off my exercise routine for a long time because of this carelessness. It is advisable not to have anything for an hour after a workout session. Have 4-5 almonds or a banana half an hour before the workout to retain energy.
  1. I used to sit and watch television after dinner, and sleep thereafter
I read once that sumo wrestlers are made to sleep immediately after heavy eating to make them look the way they do. Get the hint! No matter what people say, we all tend to follow this routine. Make a habit to not sit for half an hour after every meal.
