Check Out The Disadvantages Of Sleeping Just After A Meal
Have you been told that you should not go to bed right after a meal? Well, you must have. Some people say that anything eaten just before heading to sleep gets turned into fat. This is not true! However, there are good reasons to avoid sleeping just after a meal as it can cause problems that range from digestive trouble to an increased risk for stroke.
The Disadvantages Of Sleeping Just After A Meal
1) Weight gain
How much you eat is more important than when you eat. To lose weight you should be able to burn off more number of calories than you consume. It really does not matter whether you consume those calories first thing in the morning or last thing in the night. Eating your meal late at night has other dangers such as a weak willpower and impaired judgment. Both are a result of being tired. You might get hungry at midnight and head for the leftover cake or ice cream lying in the fridge instead of making a veggie salad for yourself. You make unhealthy decisions at these hours of the night because you don’t seem to know what is good for you and what is not. So, you eat unhealthy stuff and go back to bed leaving no chance to burn the extra calories you just ingested!
You may feel good by lying flat on your back post a huge meal but as your body is resting, your digestive system is working very hard. Heart burn is due to excess of stomach acid and there is a burning sensation that spreads from the belly, to the chest and at times up to the throat. It can also be accompanied by burping and can make it difficult for you to sleep.
3) Acid Reflux
Acid reflux is caused due to the valve between the esophagus and stomach not closing all the way. This makes the acid in the stomach to get back to the throat, which results in a burning sensation. This condition also called Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) can get aggravated when you lay down flat on your back post your meal. If this condition is left untreated, the stomach acid can damage the mucous membranes by washing up to the esophagus.
Going to sleep just after a meal can increase your risk of suffering from a stroke. A study was conducted and it was found that the risk of stroke was the lowest in individuals who had the longest time gap between their meal and nap time. There are different theories for the reason why people get stroke but it includes the idea that acid reflux is more likely to lead to sleep apnea that is linked with stroke. Another theory is that digestion has an effect on your BP, blood sugar levels and cholesterol such that it increases the likelihood of having a stroke. However, more studies are needed to confirm these theories.
