Do Potatoes Prevent Your Weight Loss?
Potatoes have a special place in Indian cuisine as far as I know. You have aalo gobhi, baigan aalo, aalo bhindi, dum aalo and many more dishes where the crown prince is potato! Even chaat items have potatoes in them whether it is aalo chaat or the stuffing in the pani puri! I am literally drooling at this moment! No, I am not discussing about tasty street food here! The question put forth here is- Can potatoes hinder weight loss?
Potatoes are kind of low in calories and have a variety of vitamins and minerals to offer but they are not the best choice for weight loss and weight maintenance.
You gain weight with potatoes
A long term study was conducted by the Harvard University and it was found that potato chips and potatoes were the two foods that topped the list of foods linked with weight gain, even more than sugar-sweetened beverages and processed meats. According to the study, consuming potato chips contributed to a 1.7 pound (one pound is about half a kilo) gain in weight over the 4 year long period. And eating potatoes on a daily basis contributed to a weight gain of 1.3 pounds!
Nutrients present in potatoes
One of the lead authors of the Harvard study thinks that the link between potatoes and weight gain is because of the veggie’s nutrient makeup. Potatoes are basically carbs, one large potato with skin has around 63 g of carbs to offer and this is about half of the recommended dietary allowance of an adult! When we cook potatoes, they get broken down quickly into sugar in the bloodstream. This sugar is removed quickly by the action of insulin leaving a person feel hungry again after a short while.
If you are a potato lover and are also a weight watcher, there is no need to remove them from your diet entirely. In addition to carbs, a large baked potato with its skin intact has about 6.6 g of fibre and is a good source of magnesium, potassium, copper and vitamin C. Potatoes are also certified as a heart-healthy food by the American Heart Association as it has low amounts of saturated fat and low cholesterol per serving. In order to eat them without packing on kilos, just stick to one or two moderate servings per week. Avoid loading it with high calorie add-ons like butter or sour cream. It would be great if you include the skin as you get added fibre.
You can go in for sweet potatoes instead! Yes, sweet potatoes are known to offer a lot of nutrients and at the same time are good for weight loss. You can use sweet potato in the place of potato. A cup of sweet potatoes has 28 g of carbs. The carbs are of complex type. You can have sweet potatoes in many ways, boiled, baked, grilled. You can use them instead of fattening foods for thickening your soup! You can thicken your soup without corn starch or the calorie dense cream when you use sweet potatoes. Boil sweet potatoes, sprinkle some salt, add a dash of lemon juice and enjoy it.
The bottom line
Potatoes need to be avoided if you are on a weight loss diet. It may be hard but not impossible!
