The other day I went to the market with my mom, to buy veggies and fruits, that’s where I found this dragon fruit kept in a basket, Rs.75/- per fruit! The vendor saying this fruit helps you fight dengue, not sure it does, these days they pass off anything as a solution for any current diseases. But what was actually surprising was this fruit which was exclusively available only with top malls a year back is now so easily available in the market! So let’s see if it’s worth the price it demand’s.
This fruit is originally known as Pitaya/Pitahaya and belongs to the cactus family. And thus the cultivation of the fruit is a bit hard as over watering may spoil the plant. The fruit has a similar texture to the Kiwi fruit, also it has the same crunchy seedy part like a kiwi. The fruit is eaten raw and is mildly sweet. The fruit has a reddish pink skin and it’s thin enough to cut easily with a knife.
Now for the health benefits of the Dragon fruit:

The seeds of the fruit are high in polyunsaturated fats (omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids) that reduce triglycerides and lower the risk of cardiovascular disorders.
This fruit is one of the 10 exotic fruits in the world but has a short lifespan as it is harvested only after it has over ripened and doesn’t last long hence. The fruit tastes mildly sweet and has a mushy texture. They are usually white or pink on the inside, but all the fruits I have encountered are white. This fruit also has shown a remarkable feat in controlling blood sugar level in diabetes, that’s a good news for people with diabetes! For all the skin caring people out there, this fruit can treat acne! Just mix it half the fruit with some water and apply daily to your acne, they help it heal.
