Why Eating Beef Is Not A Healthy Idea?
Do you love indulging in a steak after a hectic day? Maybe after reading this post you will think twice before eating it if you are really health conscious and want to stay fit! But everyone wants to be healthy and fit always, right? Beef has harmful fats that can heavily affect your cholesterol levels and increase your risk of heart disease. Along with that beef has a high amount of calories too, that can increase your chances of weight gain. And you don’t want that to happen as excess weight is root cause of all kinds of ailments. Have a look for yourself!
Increases LDL (bad cholesterol)
Beef contains high amount of saturated fat that is known to be harmful to the heart. There are debates going on about the effects of saturated fat but it is felt that saturated fat is not good for heart health. It is known to raise the levels of LDL. LDL i.e. the bad cholesterol can get built up in the insides of the arteries, making them narrow. This makes the heart to work harder. The strain on the heart raises your blood pressure along with putting you at a risk of a heart attack. Your daily calories from saturated fat should not exceed 10 percent.
Decreases HDL (Good cholesterol)
Consumption of beef alters your good-to-bad-cholesterol ratio and damages your heart. High density lipoprotein or HDL is known as the good cholesterol that sends the LDL(bad cholesterol) to the liver where it is broken down by enzymes is thrown out of the body through waste. When the levels of HDL become very low, the concentrations of the bad cholesterol –LDL continue to rise thereby increasing your chances of getting a cardiovascular disease.
Leads to weight gain
Being high in fat, beef is high in calories. And you know that ingesting too many calories can result in weight gain. Just a 3 ounce serving of beef has about 200 calories, but you get more than 3 ounces on your plate and that means so many calories. And as already said, all that leads to weight gain because your body is consuming more calories than it can burn. However, if you can work out to burn all those calories, the story is different! You need to be careful with beef if you want to lose weight to maintain your existing weight.
Now, I am not leaving you high and dry! Let me give you some good suggestions for good health, especially if you are watching your weight.
You can reduce 20 calories from your meal and reduce your saturated fat intake by half when you swap 3 ounces of beef for the same amount of chicken breast. If you want to go in for a better meat than beef, then go in for mutton which is red meat that is naturally lean. 3 ounces of mutton has just 120 calories and less than a gram of saturated fat. However, if you happen to crave beef and really want to indulge in some, opt for leaner cuts. If you eat ground beef try selecting varieties that are more than 80 percent lean, in order to reduce the fat and calories.
Stay healthy and fit!
