Top 5 Foods For A Healthy Vagina
We have always been talking about foods for a healthy heart, healthy lungs, healthy kidney and other parts of our body but not even once have we ever thought of foods related to a very important part of our body… our vagina. We Indian women are groomed that way to ignore the needs of this most ignored part of our body. We dread to take a look down there even when we are alone. As a result, this part of our body gets ignored and cries for attention when it gets an infection. Now the worst part of the story is that we think that keeping vagina clean and hygienic is enough for its health while the fact remains that there are a few foods which are very important to be consumed on a daily basis to keep our vagina healthy.
What is a healthy vagina?
Anyone who has ever had a vaginal infection can understand what I am talking about. Itching, burning, redness and that irritating discomfort is never pleasant. A healthy vagina has a naturally acidic pH and other healthy bacteria that keep infections at bay. The kind of foods we eat influences and alters that pH level resulting in the change in smell down there. The normal vaginal pH is 3.8 to 4.5. Infections often cause a vaginal pH higher than 4.5.
Effects of different food on vagina
Different foods that we eat have different effects on the smell and balance of our vagina. For example spices, onions, garlic, meat, dairy, green vegetables and alcohol can all affect the natural balance. When we eat Fruits and drink fruit juices then things down there turn sweet, but it may last only for two to three days.

The Rainbow Diet
Yes, I call it my Rainbow Diet (Okay it doesn’t have actual rainbow colours but colours are colours and anything colourful for me is a Rainbow). Is it really so difficult to guess what it’s all about? Lots of fresh fruits, green veggies, whole grains, and plenty of water. The yellow bananas, white yogurt, red and blueberries, green spinach and any other coloured veggies and fruits. Incorporating mentioned foods into your diet is one of the simplest ways to promote a strong reproductive system by preventing menstrual cramps, yeast infections, urinary tract infections, and vaginal dryness. Here are the specific foods to be added for a happy and healthy vagina.
Yogurt with live and active cultures are probiotics and help the vagina maintain a healthy acidic pH and balance. The benefits of probiotics are well known and we can find different food companies adding them to their prime products list. Give rich and creamy yogurt a try but don’t forget that it should contain live and active cultures. Other sources of probiotics include kimchi and other such fermented vegetables. See the recipe here.
Cranberry juice is a potent food to prevent and relieve the symptoms of urinary tract infections.
Nuts, Omega3 and other healthy fats
Nuts, seeds, and healthy fats like olive oil help keep skin in perfect condition and prevent vaginal dryness.
fresh fruit and vegetables
Water is the key to the healthy condition of all the parts of our body. Muscles and bodily fluids are dependent on water. The Mucous membranes which are found in our eyes, mouth, and vagina all rely on a well-hydrated body to function properly. Drinking minimum eight glasses a day not only aids in natural lubrication but could also create a milder vaginal scent.
Just a reminder here otherwise we all know about it… right!
Our bladder and vaginal health are also dependent on two things more; proper hygiene, breathable – undergarments and safe sex.
Foods to Avoid
There are certain foods which must be controlled and avoided for a healthy and infection free vagina.
The best way to keep vagina healthy is to starve bacteria of the sugars and other carbohydrates which it needs for growth. And do we need to explain this more? Oh! come on a Low Carbohydrate diet is the only way out. So cut back on sugar for the sake of your vagina, please. Do we need to tell here that all the women with high blood sugar or diabetes are always at an increased risk for vaginal yeast infections?
Alcohol and Caffiene
Most of the alcohol is full of sugars on which microbes feed upon. Some experts recommend avoiding any food containing yeast like bread and beer though some experts don’t agree to this. Anyhow is there any point risking your health for something that has proven by all as unhealthy? Caffeine also supposedly has a bad effect on vagina, if consumed in excess.
