Fruits And Veggies With Low Sugar Content
Everyone knows that added sugar is bad for health. This is why you should steer clear of sugary soft drinks and packaged fruit juices. By eliminating added sugar from your diet you are taking a step towards good health. Foods with added sugar are loaded with calories that are not needed by the body and also don’t have any nutrients to offer.
Fruits and veggies too contain some amount of sugar. If you are on a low carb diet or a very low sugar diet, you must avoid starchy veggies like potatoes and sweet potatoes. You should also avoid dried fruits and fruit juices. You should choose fruits and veggies that have less sugar and less amount of carbs in them but you should not eliminate them from your diet. This is because you need the fibre, minerals and vitamins present in fruits and veggies.
Here are some fruits and veggies with low sugar content
Berries are the best option if you want to keep your sugar intake low but not give up eating fruits. The carbs present in berries are fibre and very little of it is sugar. For instance, ½ a cup of raspberries have only 2.7 g of sugar and the same quantity of strawberries have 3.5 g of sugar. Compared to other berries, blueberries have a little more sugar, they have 7.4 g per ½ a cup. However, it is still less than the typical serving of fruit. Do you know that a medium banana has 14.4 g of sugar, an apple of medium size has 18.9 g and just half a mango has 23 g of sugar??
Broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage are all cruciferous vegetables. They are quiet nutritious and at the same time have very low sugar content. One cup of cooked cauliflower has 2.6 g of natural sugar and a cup of broccoli has 2.2 g of sugar. You need not worry about your sugar intake when you have these cruciferous veggies. You can have them in your salads, stir-fries and soups. As these veggies are high in fibre, they help you feel full faster and you can manage your weight well.
Green leafy vegetables have hardly any sugar in them. A cup of raw leafy greens has less than 0.5 grams of sugar. You have a lot of options to choose from. You have lettuce, spinach and greens of all kinds (fenugreek greens, mustard greens and many more) to include in your diet. You can add lettuce to your salad and prepare a dressing that is free of added sugar. You can go in for olive oil and vinegar for the dressing. Many leafy greens are used in stir-fries and omelettes. Indian cuisine has lot of dishes with greens as the main ingredient.
Tomatoes, radishes and mushrooms
When on a sugar free diet, you can liberally consume most of the non-starchy veggies as they are low in sugar. You can have one whole tomato, a few radishes and a whole cup of raw mushrooms for less than 5 g of natural sugar. Other veggies that are very low in sugar include cucumber, green beans, zucchini, bell peppers and carrots. They are high in fibre too and thus don’t significantly influence the levels of blood sugar.
