The HCG Diet For Weight Loss- A Dangerous Fad!
Have you heard of the HCG diet for weight loss? Well, I was astonished to learn about it and I am sure you too will be!
The diet has two parts one part is the consumption of HCG and another part is a low calorie diet. Now you may wonder what HCG is! Hold on to your horses! It is a hormone called human chorionic gonadotropin, which is produced in the body during pregnancy.
Part one of the diet is the consumption of HCG as tablets or as injections. It is believed that it brings the level of hunger down and targets the fat stores of the body. Actually it is harmful; I will get to that soon. Let me cover the basics first!
Part two is a low calorie diet or I may call it an extremely low calorie diet. It is referred to as a 500 calorie diet by many. For each meal of yours you need to choose from a list of foods. You can have 100 g of protein, one veggie, a fruit and a toast. Water? Well, 2 litres a day and unlimited tea and coffee sweetened with stevia.
Exercising is not required for this diet. You have to stay on this diet for not more than 40 days and then enter the maintenance phase. On the first two days you have to gorge on food 😛 along with consumption of HCG and from the third day shift to the low calorie diet. You need to stop once you reach your weight loss goal.
I am not getting much into the details of this diet because I don’t seem to like it. Why so, read on!
Why HCG diet is a dangerous fad?
We are done with the basics but now it is time for the real thing to be unraveled before you! You may ask whether HCG diet is safe and effective. The answer to that is NO! The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) has advised people to steer clear of weight loss products that contain HCG. HCG is actually used as a prescription medicine to treat fertility issues. It is not meant for over-the -counter use at all. Also, there is no evidence that HCG works for weight loss. Companies that are selling HCG containing weight loss products are breaking the law!
HCG is the most talked about diet because it severely restricts calories. Like I mentioned above, you will be consuming only 500 to 800 calories a day with the HCG diet. People who are on such a low calorie diet will naturally lose weight, at least on a short term basis. The weight will bounce back! Also limiting calories severely can cause the following problems:
- Gallstone formation
- Irregular heartbeat
- An imbalance of electrolytes
Side effects of the HCG diet have been reported that include irritability, fatigue, depression, restlessness, build up of fluid in the body, swelling up of breasts in males and more serious ones like formation of blood clots and blocking of blood vessels.
Weight loss is a lifestyle change and quick fixes will never work! Time and again this has been said on the blog. I am surprised at the desperation people show to lose weight that they are ready to even to inject them self with a hormone not meant for over-the-counter sales. It is like playing with nature!
