Studies are too few to show whether this herb is actually effective in treating respiratory issues.

Lobeline, which is the active ingredient in lobelia has effects that are similar to those of nicotine. Research has also proved that the compound lobeline affects dopamine which is a brain chemical that influences addiction. That is why lobelia has been prescribed to help quit smoking. However, published studies have not yet proved that lobelia can be effective in treating addiction.
Lobelia is also called puke weed. The University of Maryland Medical Center says that a century ago, American doctors used to give lobelia to patients in order to induce vomiting and remove the toxins from the body. However, homeopathy, the herb is used to help reduce vomiting and nausea. You have to be cautious as too much of it can have a reverse effect i.e. it can cause dizziness, sweating or nausea. It would be advisable to start taking lobelia in lower doses along with other herbs and then increase the dose if you don’t happen to experience any adverse reactions. You can have it as a tea by adding a few drops in warm water.
