Hello All!!

Right from childhood we all are asked to take part in sports. Why? That is because playing sports make us physically strong. How essential it is for adults to play sports for fitness? Come along let us discover together.

We humans are made for a physically active lifestyle and not a sedentary one. As cavemen we were very active. In the last few million years we have changed very little genetically but our lifestyle has witnessed a sea change. Our forefathers did a lot of pushing, lifting, squatting, walking, pulling etc. And what do we do now? We press keys, turn knobs of doors, sit at one place for the whole day. Yes, I agree we do board buses and run after them but that is only for a little part of the day. Our life is predominantly sedentary and to make it active it is essential to take part in physical activities like exercise or  moderate intensity sports.

Helps you physically

Our human body is meant to be used; it actually gets better with use. Taking part in medium or high intensity sports of any type aims at making your heart pump faster even if it is for a short time period. It is recommended that all adults should take part in at least 150 mins of exercise per week that falls in the moderate category. This will help in preventing the following diseases:

  • Diabetes
  • Arthritis
  • Heart ailments
  • Cancer
  • Hypertension (high blood pressure)
  • Obesity
  • Osteoporosis

It also helps in :

  • Controlling body weight.
  • Strengthening your bones and muscles.
  • Improving your mood.
  • Improving your ability in performing day to day activities and prevent falls (for the elderly especially).
  • Increasing your longevity.

Helps the psychological health

Apart from helping people physically, playing sports can ward off diseases of the mind and keep it healthy. It has been found that the elderly who exercise and play a sport regularly are less likely to develop signs of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. Participating in sports can help reduce:

  • anxiety
  • depression
  • psychological distress
  • emotional disturbance

The sport need not be physically very demanding. It has been found in a study that even a low to moderate intensity sport can help people suffering from anxiety.

Moreover, taking part in a sport improves self esteem as the body image, physical self-worth and opinions about one’s own self improve. When you participate in a sport with other people, it raises your spirit along with cultivation of intra-personal skills, concentration and focus. It leaves a very positive impact on the mind.

Improves social life

When you take part in a sport, you meet new people and make new friends. A human being a social animal can extract happiness when in a group of people. Learning about new cultures and interacting with people is good for social well-being. One can build healthy relationships with the help of sports.
