The Master Cleanse diet is a low calorie diet that aims at faster weight loss. It claims that it can drop 20 pounds (9 kilos) in 10 days along with detoxifying your body. The logic behind this diet is that if you consume only liquids and give up solid foods, you will lose weight.

How does The Master Cleanse – lemonade diet work?

The Master Cleanse diet was actually devised to flush out toxins from the body. Now it has been popularized for providing faster weight loss.

In this diet you are supposed to bid goodbye to solid food for 10 days! Your diet will have water, lemonade and laxatives alone. You will have to drink four cups of salt water every morning, one cup of herbal laxative tea before going to bed and 6 to 12 glasses of lemonade throughout the day. The lemonade is made with lemon juice, cayenne pepper, maple syrup and water. Even if you crave for something else you can’t have it as straying from the 650 calorie a day diet is not allowed. (650 a day! So low!!).

After 10 days of dieting you can slowly come back to eating solid foods beginning with soup and fruit juice. It is not specified what the diet should be post cleanse but it is advised to eat very less meat and dairy and take a probiotic to assist digestion. Experts do not advise making The Master Cleanse diet your regular routine.

If you follow this diet, you may have to face the detox diet symptoms and they are as follows:

  • Cravings
  • Fatigue
  • Irritability
  • Aches
  • Pains
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting

The proponents of this diet say that these signs are of the body’s detoxification but this claim lacks scientific evidence. Health experts say that the liver is capable enough of flushing out impurities from the body.

Will you be losing weight with this diet?

The million dollar question! Weight loss will happen as you are taking laxatives at night and consuming one-third of the number of calories taken by most adults (650 calories). The weight loss results will not be lasting ones as you will be losing water weight and lean muscle mass and not fat. This diet may affect your metabolism and you will regain all the lost weight when you get back to your normal diet.

Health risks of the Master Cleanse diet

If you are already healthy, you could try the diet once probably but if you keep getting on and off the diet you could end up with the following health problems:

It is best to seek the advice of your doctor and be ready for a bid NO he is going to tell you!! He is mostly going to advise you something else for weight loss.

Does the diet stick to the accepted dietary guidelines?

No, it does not!

Fat– As you are not eating solid food, you will get far less than the recommended 20 to 35 percent of your daily calories from fat. The master cleanse diet (sample menu) provides 1 percent.

Protein– Recommended calories form protein should be 10 to 35 percent per day. The diet provides just 1 percent.

Carbs– In this diet carbs provide 98 % of the day’s calories which is too much when compared to the acceptable range of 45 to 65 percent.
