Check Out Nutrition facts And Benefits of Litchi
Litchi is one fruit that tops the list of my favourite fruits. But the sad part is that you don’t get this fruit all round the year! It is available in India during summers. You get it in bunches and it tastes totally heavenly. The delicate flavour makes this fruit totally irresistible.
Litchi is a tropical fruit belonging to the soapberry family. You will find it in subtropical areas. It is a popular fruit of China and South-East Asia.
The litchi has a pinkish-red outer covering that needs to be removed before consumption. The edible flesh is white in colour and there is a dark brown seed inside.
It has a mild flowery and sweet flavour that has won many hearts! You can find it added to ice-creams, juices, jelly, sherbet and wine. Litchi is a great source of healthy antioxidants, vitamins and minerals.
Litchis are chiefly composed of water (82 percent) and carbs (16.5 percent).
Carbs and fibre
Leaving the water part, litchis are mainly made up of carbs. One litchi has about 1.5 to 1.7 g of carbs. The carbs in litchis come from the sugars in it that are responsible for their sweetness. Their fibre content is relatively low.
Vitamins and minerals
Litchis are a good source of vitamins and minerals. Have a look!
Vitamin C is the most abundant vitamin in litchis. A single litchi has around 8% of the RDI of vitamin C.
Litchis are known to be decent sources of copper. It is needed to prevent adverse affects on heart health.
Litchis have potassium that is needed to improve heart health.
Litchis are a great source of plant compounds that are wonderful antioxidants. It has been reported that litchis contain higher levels of antioxidant polyphenols than other fruits and they are epicatechin and rutin.
Rutin: It is a powerful antioxidant and according to studies, it protects against heart disease, cancer and diabetes.
Litchi- The health benefits
Frankly speaking, the health benefits of litchi have not been studied yet. However, we should keep in mind that it is a fruit and studies say that eating fruits and veggies improves health and reduces the risk of diseases.
Litchi contains minerals, vitamins and antioxidants such as copper, potassium, vitamin C, rutin and epicatechin, which help in protecting against diabetes, cancer and heart disease.
Fruits are nature’s gifts for us humans. Anything natural will definitely be good for health and the same logic goes for litchi. They are fun to eat and have antioxidants that fight free radical damage.
The fruit has not known to have any adverse effects when consumed in moderation. However, in rare cases there can be allergies.
