Pranayama To Alleviate Cold And Cough
Yoga is not just a workout but an ancient wisdom of our land that teaches us a plethora of healthy practices that help treat several illnesses. Pranayama or yogic breathing is not just limited to meditation but also to prevent cough and cold. But before you go ahead with pranayama, do consult your doctor.
Kapalbhati Pranayama literally gets translated to skull shining breath. It is a yogic kriya that cleanses the lungs by expelling toxins. It can prevent as well as treat cough. Here is how to do the pranayama:
Sit down in a comfortable position, preferably cross-legged. Place hands over the navel in order to get your attention there. Now, forcefully expel all the air from your lungs using the muscles of your abdomen. The movement is quite similar to blowing your nose. Next step is to quickly inhale air through the nostrils and filling the lungs. Repeat the process 25 to 30 times. Gradually increase your number of repetitions to 100.
Ujjayi Pranayama can be loosely translated to ‘conqueror breath’. A basic yogic breathing technique, Ujjayi Pranayama is used in several yoga postures and also in meditation, It is also called as ocean breath due to the soft sound created while performing it. Ujjayi Pranayama helps clear the mind as well as the sinuses. Here is how to go about it:
Slightly constrict the muscles of your throat in order to control the air flow. Inhale through the nose slowly and allow your stomach to expand. Next, expel the air out slowly and let the lungs get completely empty while keeping the shoulders relaxed. Your exhalation should be twice as long as your inhalation. Repeat this for 5 to 10 minutes.
Surya Bhedana Pranayama
Surya Bhedana Pranayama is also called single nostril breath. It is specifically used to treat as well as prevent colds and symptoms of seasonal allergy. This pranayama is also known to balance the brain. Here is how to about it:
Sit down in a comfortable position and expel all the air from the lungs. With the help of the ring finger and the pinky finger of the right hand, close the left nostril. Breathe in deeply through the right nostril. Pinch your both nostrils to shut them and hold the breath briefly. Next, release your left nostril and exhale. Now reverse the process and inhale through the left nostril and exhale through the right. Repeat the cycle for 1 to 3 mins.
Bhramari Pranayama is done by pressing your lips together and humming creating the sound of a buzzing bee/ The vibrations that are made while doing bhramari help in opening the sinuses and allow the phlegm to drain thus relieving sinus pressure. It may also help in preventing the growth of bacteria. Bhramari is specifically used to treat sinus congestion. It is quite helpful if you are already suffering from a cold and have so much congestion that you can neither practice ujjayi nor surya bhedana pranayama.
