How To Prevent Stress From Building Up?
There a thousands of things that we have to do day in and day out. Between busy office hours, taking care of children, going grocery shopping, it is quite easy to forget that you are under stress. Anybody living in a big city has the same situation to face.
Though you don’t realize, your body is well aware of all the stress and tension. It can start a series of health problems too. Being in stress constantly makes your nervous system all keyed up, so even a teeny-weeny amount of stress can make you feel overwhelmed.
This makes it essential that you build a relaxation routine for yourself.
Be on a look out for certain signs
The best way to handle your stress is to keep it from building in the first place. However, it can be hard to tell when you are inching towards the danger zone as the signals of the body are usually subtle. You might be unaware that stress affects the quality of your sleep. Even after 8 hours of sleep you might feel tired.
Try shifting your focus
When you are tensed, you might have the urge to replay what went wrong again and again in your mind. To avoid this you must shift focus. Search a quiet corner for yourself, sit down and concentrate on how the seat beneath you is making you feel. Take deep breaths. Exhaling for a longer period than you inhale helps deepen your breathing and this calms your nervous system. You can even practice this way of breathing when you are not stressed.
Move around a bit
It is easy to just skip exercise when you are stressed out. But you shouldn’t be doing so. Exercising actually helps in balancing stress hormones. Take a break, choose the stairs instead of the lift, join a kickboxing class and do things that get you moving! After your workout, cool down with some soft music. It is said by researchers that brain waves tend to sync up with the music rhythm and puts you in a meditative state.
Snack the right way
It is but human nature to indulge in desserts when you are stressed out. It is like finding your happiness in food. But sticking to healthy food is all the more important. Sugary snacks can spike your blood sugar levels and make you feel anxious. A healthier way out is to dip bright strawberries in dark chocolate sauce and enjoy them! Dark chocolate is known to reduce stress hormones like cortisol. You can also munch on carrots and celery sticks in order to release your frustration.
Talk to someone
Spending time with your friends helps in making you pump out oxytocin ,the feel good hormone. So try catching up with your friend at the end of a hectic day or just call them when you are free.
Get up from your desk and get some fresh air. It can probably help you in dealing with tough situations in a calmer manner. Stepping outside, keep your mind off things. If you are lucky enough to find a garden nearby, don’t forget to stop and smell the fragrance of flowers. Research shows that when you inhale scents such as that of lavender, your stress levels will come down.
Get ready for a good night’s sleep
When you lie down on your bed after a hectic day, just jot down your worries or negative thoughts on a piece of paper. Doing so is like getting your thoughts out and putting them aside.
