It is common to have dry skin in winters as the humidity level drops down. The air outside is cold and dry and this makes the water in your skin evaporate faster. This tends to make the skin feel tight and dry and also look flaky. In fact, in winter, you skin loses 25 percent of its ability to hold moisture.
Way out: In winters it is important that you wear enough number of protective clothing. Apply a rich body lotion that has glycerin in it and pay attention to your feet, elbows, hands and knees.
2) Indoor heating
In the winters people use indoor heating to stay warm. The dry warm air makes your skin and mucous membranes dry. And you are left with chapped lips, dry noses and a dry throat.
Way out: Use a humidifier indoors! Simple!
There are many benefits of a hot water bath but it can strip your skin of the protective oils and make you look very dry!
Way out: Instead of hot water choose warm water. Keep the bath short (10 mins) and just pat dry.
4) Not using the body lotion
Winters or summers, your body needs a good moisturizer even if you are covered. Dry skin can become flaky and itchy.
Way out: After a shower, apply a body lotion immediately. Also apply it again before hitting the bed. Choose a body lotion with glycerin for best results.
5) Washing hands frequently
When you wash your hands very often, it can cause dry and chapped hands. Even the use of hand sanitizers can dry out your hands as they have alcohol in them. Too much exposure to soap, water and alcohol can the strip your skin of natural oils that can lead to chapped hands, cracks and splits.
Way out: After a hand wash use a hand cream. While doing household chores wear protective gloves.
6) Using harsh soap bars
Most bar soaps tend to strip off the skin’s natural oils and makes it dry.
Way out: Choose a moisturizing body wash instead of a bar soap.
7) Staying dehydrated
In winters, you may not feel as thirsty as you do in summer. But whatever be the season, you do lose water through your skin every day. The human body is made of 70% water, that keeps our cells healthy and plump. Not drinking enough water can make you dehydrated and give you dry skin.
Way out: Drink lots of fluids and avoid beverages containing caffeine.
8) Not eating right
The skin cells of the body are protected by a layer of lipids that help in keeping them soft and flexible. If your diet does not have enough fatty acids, it won’t have material to maintain the protective wrapping.
Way out: Eat foods that have healthy fats, namely omega 3. This replenishes the natural fats of the skin and makes it supple. You can get omega 3 from fish, tofu, walnuts and flax seeds.
9) Constantly licking your lips
Though licking your lips may make you feel good for a while, it eventually dries out the lips when the saliva gets evaporated. Also, using matte or long-wear lipsticks can result in dry, cracked and chapped lips.
Way out: Go in for a good lip butter. Apply it underneath your lipstick and once again at night before going to bed. Choose glossy and creamy lipsticks.
