This phenomenon of sleep talking may seem very innocent at first but deep within, it is much more grave a problem. What is sleep talking?
“Somniloquy” also known as sleep talking is actually a sleep disorder in which a person talks while sleeping without actually being aware of it.
It isn’t limited to just talking. The person may whisper, shout, laugh or even cry in their sleep. Episodes like these may not last for more than 30 seconds at a time. Also, it is rare for a person to have more than one episode of deep talking per night. Someone suffering from sleep talking may murmur, use words not used regularly in everyday life which makes it difficult to decipher what the person is actually saying. Also, in-depth studies have shown that sleep talking is not a product of the conscious mind.
Who is more prone to sleep talking?
The frequency of sleep talking varies from each person to person. Statistics show that 5 percent of adults talk in their sleep even though it is found to be more common among males as compared to females. Some may do it once in a month, others may do it every single night. Sleep talking is also common among children between the ages of 3 to 10.

- Sleep terrors
- Sleep apnea
- REM sleep behavior disorder
- Psychiatric disorders
- Nocturnal seizures
- Mental or medical illnesses

Can sleep talking be treated?
Sleep talking once in a while is okay and no cause of worry. One doesn’t need a specific treatment to prevent talking in the sleep. But, if your sleep talking is so severe a problem that it disturbs your partner, then visiting a physician is a must. There may be an underlying medical explanation behind this. You can however, reduce the occurrence of sleep talking by following these tips:
Follow a regular sleep schedule and maintain a sleep diary. Note down the time that you went to bed, the time when you must have probably fell asleep and finally the time when you finally woke up.
Get adequate sleep, about 8-9 hours or which makes you less drowsy throughout the day. The most common cause of sleep talking is actually sleep deprivation.
Reduce the frequency and the severity of sleep talking by practicing proper sleep hygiene.
Avoid consuming caffeinated drinks or alcoholic beverages before sleep. Also keep the portion of meals under control to enjoy a peaceful and uninterrupted sleep in the night.
