6 Things You Didn’t Know About Weight Loss
You always read about weight loss and tips to lose weight. Does this mean you know everything about weight loss? Nope! There are things that you must not have been aware of and this post aims at telling you about those!
1) Weight is genetic
There is a gene called fatso gene (more politely called FTO now) that is responsible for excess weight. It has been found that people having 2 copies of the gene are 40% more likely to have diabetes and 60% more likely to be obese when compared to those without it. Even those who have a single copy of the gene weigh more. However, having the fatso gene doesn’t mean that you are trapped forever with excess weight. Regular exercise can offset the risk.
Now do you know why actresses thank their genes when asked about their slim frame? 😛
2) Your metabolism can be changed
Yes, you needn’t blame your body’s metabolism for being fat anymore. A researcher happened to study a set of twins where one was thin and the other fat. She learned that the fat cells in heavier twins went through metabolic changes that made fat burning more difficult. To get back on track you need to involve yourself in regular physical activity.
3) Stress causes weight gain
In stressful circumstances your cravings for carb-rich snacks get triggered that are known to calm down stress hormones. Stress hormones also increase storage of fat. Stress for our prehistoric ancestors meant drought or attack from wild animals. So, the rapid food storage was needed in order to survive the situations. In today’s scenario we take stress while sitting on a chair and the unused calories get accumulated on the waist.
So, make it a point to get rid of stress. You can join a yoga class, adopt a pet or spend quality time with your loves ones.
4) Sleeping more makes you lose more
When you sleep more (7-8 hours), you will have a sense of fullness and that will spontaneously help you lose weight. Research says that lack of sleep upsets the hormonal balance. It triggers the decrease in the hormone that makes you feel full (leptin) and increases the hormone that triggers hunger (ghrelin). This makes an individual feel hungry even if he is not. So, it is essential to sleep well to lose weight or maintain your existing weight. Pretty cheap weight loss treatment, isn’t it?
5) The weight of your spouse matters
When you have a fit and slim spouse, you will naturally be drawn towards his or her habits and end-up losing weight. Research says that weight gain and weight loss both can be contagious. If a person is obese, it is 37% more likely for his or her spouse to become obese too.
Within the family, slimming down seems to be catching up. Seeing one person lose weight the other members of the family adopt the healthy habit and lose weight too.
6) Antioxidants fight fat!
Free radical don’t just speed aging but also make you fat. Free radicals surface when we eat food, especially carb loaded snacks like candy bars and chips. The free radicals have devastating effects on the body. The best way to battle them is to eat a lot of antioxidants and avoid junk food. Antioxidants fight the damage caused by free radicals. So, eat a lot of colourful fruits and veggies.
