It is not the end of the world if you have been diagnosed with diabetes or pre-diabetes. Your doctor will ask you to control your blood sugar levels and that goes for every diabetic.

Know your blood glucose levels
To measure your blood glucose levels you need a glucometer. You have to get trained to use the meter properly. Make sure to wash your hands with soap and dry it before testing as hygiene is very important.
The test can be done in the following manner:
- First thing in the morning on an empty stomach (water is allowed). You should not have eaten anything for at least 8 hours. The result of the test done will be the fasting glucose level. It will let you know about your level of blood glucose without eating. Doctors often try controlling this first.
- 1 or 2 hours after the first bite of a meal.
- Before eating a meal.
Consult your doctor regarding this, he/she will advise you better regarding what your levels should be and what is the right time to do the test.
Learn counting carbs
Learn the basics of carb counting. Get a meal plan for yourself and start counting the carbs of your meals and snacks. You can learn carb counting by reading food labels. If you happen to eat more carbs than recommended for you, your blood glucose levels will get elevated and on the other hand if you don’t eat enough carbs, your blood glucose will drop down.
Exercising and blood glucose levels
Make it a point to test your blood glucose before your exercise session, during the exercise session and after the exercise session. If you are insulin dependent or on another medicine that can cause the blood sugar hit a low, you should know how you are affected by exercising. Always carry your glucometer, strips, cell phone and glucose tabs while exercising.
Blood glucose and illness
When you fall sick, Talk to your doctor and tell him/her about how you are feeling. This will help your doctor get a complete picture of your problem. Check your blood glucose levels and check your temperature.

Young women (of child bearing age) will find a change in their levels of blood glucose at different times of the month. Maintain a chart of your blood glucose levels and inform your doctor about the same.
When you start a new medicine, talk to your doctor. Some medicines for ailments other than diabetes will affect your levels of blood glucose. The doctor will either add a diabetes medicine or do some adjustment so that the blood glucose levels are not affected.
You should drink sufficient fluids. Doctors can suggest some particular fluid but mostly it is plain water. The reason why you should have a lot of fluids is that dehydration increases the levels of blood glucose.
Stick to what the doctor says. Diabetes needs your full attention. You can lead a normal life if you keep following what the doctor says and are careful about your meal timings and medication.
