4 Yoga Postures That Help Boost Immunity
The winters are here and it is that time of the year when people contract infections. But there are people who fall sick many times a year and the blame goes on their immune system. Now you may ask what the immune system actually is. It is a team of a trillion white blood cells that attack certain uninvited invaders like viruses but to do that they should be healthy. Some immune systems are able to fight some invaders better than others and this depends on several factors such as the route by which the bugs entered the body (the nose or the mouth) and how well has the body been able to demolish them previously.
Now comes our age old practice of Yoga. It is a legacy passed on to us by our ancestors which has gained a lot of acceptance all around the world. Do you know that yoga helps in stimulating the 4 main physiological systems that are linked with the immune system? They are the digestive, circulatory, nervous and endocrine systems. Yoga poses that affect at least one of the 4 systems can help boost immune function.
Here are the immunity boosting yoga poses:
Down dog vinyasa
The down dog vinyasa is a short and dynamic sequence that targets the circulatory system. It is an excellent way of warming up. Down dog vinyasa stretches the major muscle groups, thereby strengthening them. The pose also helps promote circulation and helps white blood cells in moving through the body in order to fight infection causing viruses and bacteria.
Bow pose or Dhanurasana
The pose as the name suggests makes you get into a pose that resembles a bow. This pose puts pressure on your belly and makes the digestive system strong and healthy by increasing the flow of blood to the abdominal organs. The digestive system is full of white blood cells that fight invaders (lymphocytes). So, strengthening the digestive system will boost your overall immunity as well as your health.
Shoulderstand or salamba sarvangasana
You must be aware of a gland at the base of your throat called the thyroid gland. While doing the shoulder stand, you put pressure on the thyroid gland that stimulates the endocrine system. The endocrine system works with the nervous and immune system in order to help the body in coping up with stress of all kinds and fighting disease causing microbes.
Balasana or child’s pose
This simple yoga pose is quite effective in boosting immunity. It helps tone the abdominal organs and stimulate digestion as well as excretion. Apart from that the asana makes you relax and stretch your arms, spine and lower back. It is an easy and effective asana.
It is advisable that you do these poses (things like shoulder stand especially) under the supervision of a yoga practitioner if you are a newbie. Learn the technique well. Once you get the hang of it, you can possibly go about doing it whenever and wherever you like.
So people, this time strengthen your immunity naturally with yoga and stay healthy!
