Tamarind!!! The very word floods in childhood memories. The sweet and sour taste of tamarind makes it a much sought after ingredient in various cuisines. On the personal front, tamarind or imli (as it is known in Hindi) tops the list of my all time favourites!

The tamarind tree has several health benefits to offer, right from its fruit to its leaves and bark. The fruits, seeds, leaves, flowers and bark of the tamarind tree have been used to cure ailments for centuries. The health and medicinal benefits of tamarind are as follows:

1) Lowers cholesterol

The presence of phenols and antioxidants in tamarind makes it a good option for lowering the levels of LDL (bad cholesterol) and maintaining HDL (good cholesterol) levels.

2) Good laxative

The tamarind pulp works well as a laxative. Dietary fibre present in the tamarind pulp plays a vital role in binding bile salts. Consuming just 2 tsps of tamarind paste helps in proper bowel movement.

3) Cures fever and chills

The tamarind leaves are used in herbal teas. Such medicinal teas that contain tamarind leaves extract help people recover from fever and chills.

4) Remedy for sore throat

Tamarind paste diluted with water is a good home remedy for sore throat. A person suffering from a sore throat can gargle with lukewarm diluted tamarind water to get some relief. (This does not mean that you should be gargling with spicy jaljeera!! :P)

5) Treats mouth ulcers

Tamarind pulp mixed with mint and coriander is a good treatment for mouth ulcers. Tamarind is known to have cooling a cooling affect on mouth ulcers.

The tamarind fruit pod is packed with minerals and vitamins that are essential for the production of red blood cells and for a healthy functioning of the cardiovascular system. The minerals present in it are good for bone health.

Tamarind treats bile trouble and is also given to people to have intestinal worms. In Ayurveda, tamarind is an essential ingredient in medicines that cure gastric and digestive problems.

The fruit of tamarind is rich in dietary fibre. It contains tannins, pectin and mucilage. This fibre combination plays a pivotal role in preventing constipation. A 100 g of tamarind paste has thirteen to fifteen percent of dietary fibre.

Tamarind is rich in antioxidants. As you know, antioxidants combat free radicals and thus prevent cancer and early ageing.

The seeds of tamarind are powdered and used for treating sores and inflammation. The paste of the leaves can be applied on areas where the joints are swollen. Seeds are also used to treat boils, stings, insect bites and sprains.

Consuming tamarind helps in naturally purifying the blood.

12) Thyroid disorders

Tamarind should be included in the diet of those who suffer from thyroid disorders. It can be either hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism.

One cup of tamarind water is a wonderful home remedy for mild sunstroke. Tamarind paste (two spoons) can also be given alternatively.

14) For diabetics

Tamarind paste along with jamun and other herbs help in controlling diabetes. The imli pulp helps on lowering the levels of glucose that tend to rise after a meal.

15) Treats hangover

Tamarind juice is helpful in treating a severe hangover that usually occurs from heavy consumption of alcohol. It is actually an antidote that can treat intoxication occurring from several substances.
