20 Tips to help you live longer
We all want to live a long and healthy life. But how can we work towards this goal. It is simple. Here are some tips that can help you extend your lifespan.
1. Switch your coffee for tea
Though coffee does have a lot of health benefits to offer, tea is the winner when it comes to longevity. Tea has antioxidants that can help the body fight cancer, heart disease and particularly premature ageing. In one study it was found that tea drinkers live longer than non-tea drinkers.
2. Try balancing on one leg every morning
There are yogasanas that involve balancing on one leg; you should try doing those in the morning. Balancing on one leg strengthens your core muscles that support the spine. This daily practice will protect you against falls and fractures during old age.
3. Eat 3 walnuts everyday
Walnuts are known to have the maximum anti-ageing and disease-fighting antioxidants. Even if you eat three of these nuts you can be benefitted.
4. Get vitamin D from the Sun
Get your vitamin D from the morning Sun without the application of the sunscreen. You need to get 15-20 minutes of Sun exposure each day. For the rest of the day(read scorching hot day) do apply the sunscreen to protect your skin from damage.
5. Make good friends
A recent study has shown that having close friends and relatives is the secret of a long life. Friends support us emotionally so that e can deal with stress. Do you know that feeling loved can fight ageing and help in growth of the brain. Research says that you should have at least 6 friends and I am not talking of facebook!!!
6. Stop eating when you feel 80% full
The trick to a long life is to stop eating when you are 80% full. It has been found that animals who reduce their food consumption by 1/3 rd live twice as long. Logically, if you eat less, you are putting less stress on your body.
7. Go to bed one hour earlier
You are at a greater risk of heart disease and depression if your sleep is not sufficient. If you happen to sleep for 7 hours or less try going to bed an hour early and see the difference in your health.
8. Floss every night
By flossing you reduce chances of gum disease that is linked to an increases risk of diabetes, heart trouble and some kinds of cancer.
9. Adopt a pet
If you want to live longer, adopt a dog. People who own a pet are less stressed and depressed. Owning a dog or any other pet can provide a calming effect that drops blood pressure and reduces risk of heart attacks.
10. Lend a helping hand to others
Volunteering regularly has been found to increase longevity. Those who offer a helping hand to others have lesser pains, reduced depression and better general health.
11. Be a bathroom singer
Yes, those who are active singers have a longer life expectancy. Singing reduces stress and ensures a healthy heart. So, even if you are not a good singer just sing your heart out!
12. Double the amount of fruits and veggies
Study shows that eating more of fruits and veggies decreases your chances of dying from heart trouble. Fruits and veggies have loads of vitamins and antioxidants in them.
13. Try being optimistic.
Optimists live longer than pessimists do, research too supports this fact.
14. Learn your family history
When you learn your family history you become aware of the health conditions passed on from one generation to another. This will help you be on guard when it comes to your own health.
15. Watch an hour less of TV each night
Simply put, every hour of TV watching after the age of 25 can reduce 20 minutes from your life, according to scientists.
16. Make sure you go for health checkups
If you catch your illness early, you can get it treated easily. So don’t skip the tests recommended.
17. Measure your waist rather than your weight
Measuring your waist can better predict heart disease because it points towards the dangerous fat around your vital organs. For women the waist should not be more than 80 cm and for men not more than 94 cm.
18. Laugh at least twenty times a day
Adults hardly laugh whereas children laugh about 100 times a day. Laughter is known to boost the immunity, reduce stress hormones and fight cancer.
19. Kick the butt
If you want a long life, you have to give up on smoking. Smoking not only reduces your quantity of life but also your quality of life.
20. Have strong beliefs
People with strong beliefs are able to deal with stress and emotional troubles. They are also protected from several diseases.
