Back to the study, experts carried out a comparison between HIIT (high-intensity interval training), resistance training and combined training. All the 3 forms of exercise helped in improving insulin sensitivity and lean body mass. However, only high intensity and combined training helped in improving aerobic capacity and mitochondrial function for the skeletal muscle. It was also seen that high intensity workout improved the content of muscle protein that further leads to energy boost and muscle enlargement in the elderly.
A senior researcher of the study says that exercising regularly is encouraged by the team but the final word is that for the elderly adults HIIT or high intensity training is the best as it can offer benefits at a metabolic as well as molecular level.
The study in detail
In the study, scientists kept track of metabolic and molecular changes in a group of young and elderly adults for a period of more than 12 weeks and gathered data 72 hours post completion of each kind of exercise by individuals in randomized groups.
Aerobic exercise is known to enhance the cellular machinery that makes new proteins. This helps in protein synthesis that helps in reversing the adverse effects of ageing. Researchers also advised that you should add resistant training to your exercise routine in order to achieve muscle strength. The study’s results are being used to develop new exercises and therapies for individuals at different ages.
