How is avocado oil made?

The process of making avocado oil involves multiple steps. The ripe avocados are washed, deseeded and skinned. The pulp is then pressed to create a sludgy substance that looks like guacamole. This sludge is then centrifuged in order to separate the pulp from avocado oil. The slightly green avocado oil is the ‘unrefined’ avocado oil. It can be consumed as it is or can undergo a process of refining in order to remove the impurities.

The oil is rich in healthy fats, namely monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats. These fats are anti-inflammatory unlike saturated and trans fats. The healthy fats in avocado oil soothe inflamed, broken-out skin, reduce wrinkles and the damage due to exposure to UV rays. It also improves the elasticity of the skin.

Health benefits of avocado oil

Avocado oil is packed with carotenoids, of which lutein is the most important one. It is an antioxidant that helps prevent macular degeneration due to age. Recent evidence says that lutein protects the skin form skin damage induced by UV radiation.

In addition to its own cartenoids, the great thing about avocado oil is that it boosts the absorption of carotenoids from other veggies. The oil of avocado is also known to possess chlorophyll which is the reason behind its faintly green colour. It is known to have antioxidant properties that help combat free radicals, thereby, protecting the skin from the harmful effects of aging. It can be also applied topically as a moisturizer. Just a few drops of it and apply it directly to your skin for a more soft and hydrated skin. However, make sure that you are not allergic to it by doing a patch test.
