Ayurveda is a system of medicine that has been around for more than 5000 years. To heal an individual Ayurveda follows a concept of understanding the ‘doshas’. The 3 Ayurvedic body types or doshas are:

  • Vata
  • Pitta
  • Kapha

Doshas are actually the energies that make up each and every individual. They perform different body functions.

Let us have a look at the 3 dosha types:

1) Vata Dosha

It is the energy that controls blood circulation, breathing, heartbeat and blinking. When it is in balance there is creativity and vitality in the individual but if it goes out of balance it can produce fear and anxiety.

2) Pitta Dosha

This energy controls the metabolic processes like digestion, nutrition, absorption, and maintaining body’s temperature. When in balance it leads to intelligence and contentment but out of balance it can result in ulcers and anger.

3) Kapha Dosha

This energy controls body growth. It supplies water to all parts of the body, maintains immunity and moisturizes the skin. When in balance it relates to love and forgiveness but when out of balance it leads to envy and insecurity.

The three doshas are present in every individual but usually 1-2 dominate. Dosha proportions help determine a person’s physiological and personality traits.

Characteristics of Vata predominant types-

Such people are quick learners but also tend to forget easily. They are slender, tall and fast walkers. They have cold hands and feet and are uncomfortable in cold climates. Such people are lively and fun loving with changeable moods. Having energy in short bursts, they tend to get tired easily. They respond to stress with fear, anxiety and worry. Tendency to act on impulse with fast, disjointed thoughts is found in such people. They don’t perspire much and have dry skin and hair.

Characteristics of Pitta Predominant Types

These people are well built and strong with a sharp mind with good concentration powers. They are aggressive, demanding and pushy when pitta is out of balance. They enjoy challenges, are competitive, passionate as well as romantic. They have a strong appetite and digestion. Having to wait for a meal or miss out one makes pitta predominant people irritated and angry. Skin is fair, reddish with freckles that gets sunburnt easily. Such people have discomfort in hot weather. They perspire a lot. The typical ailments they have are rashes on the skin, acne, boils, ulcers, heartburn, insomnia, acid stomach, dry/ burning eyes, can also suffer from skin cancer. By nature they are angry and impatient.

Characteristics of Kapha Predominant Types

People with a predominant kapha are relaxed, easy going, slow-paced ad affectionate souls. Loving, compassionate, forgiving, stable, reliable and faithful are some of their qualities. Physical constitution is sturdy and strong with lots of energy. Slow in learning but great long term memory. They have soft hair and skin with low voice and big ‘soft’ eyes. Such people are usually overweight and have a sluggish digestion. Kapha predominant people have excellent health and good immunity. They have a dislike for damp and cold weather. Physical problems of such people are sinus headaches, respiratory problems like asthma, allergies, and hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis).

So, these were the characteristics of people having different predominant doshas.
