A panel of health experts brought together by U.S. News & World Report has placed the Mediterranean diet at the No. 1 position and the biggest competitor for this spot is the DASH diet. Other diets trying to get the first spot in the easy-to-follow diet category have been the weight watchers diet and the Flexitarian diet. The Flexitarian diet is loved by most people due to it being flexible!
US News asks dietary consultants, nutritionists and medical experts specializing in heart health, diabetes and weight loss to rank diets in 9 different categories which include the easiest diet to follow, best diet for heart health, best diet for diabetes and for losing weight.
According to one of the panelists, there is nothing called the “best diet” that works equally well for everyone. Absolutely, we all are different individuals and no single diet can be called the best for the entire population. The best diet spot is given to the one that can be easily adopted, is sustainable and can be easily managed. After all, you would need a diet plan that lets you stick around and not run away!
Addition of two new diets!
Two new diets have been added to this year’s list. One of them is the Ketogenic diet or simply the keto diet. It is a very low-carb, high-fat diet that is directed towards weight loss.
However, you should know that the Keto diet is not a new idea as the diet has been used for decades to treat children with epilepsy. The science behind this diet is that once the body uses up the sugars for fuel, it switches to using stored fat as a source of energy and this way people can lose weight. This happens after two to four days of a very low carb diet, i.e. 20 to 50 g of carbs a day!
Even though this diet is immensely popular, experts say that it is not a very healthy way to shed weight. It is an extreme diet and is hard to stick to. Moreover, it is dangerous for those who are suffering from severe diabetes, kidney problems and heart disease. There can be short-term weight loss but that does not make this diet safe. So, think before you start following this diet.
The second new diet that ranked no. 15 is the Nutritarian diet that is plant-based and focuses on nutrient dense foods. You need to bid goodbye to sugar, salt and cold drinks and dairy in this diet. The focus is on veggies, both raw and cooked.
