How Blueberry Is The Ultimate Brain food?

There are some foods that are good for the brain such as olive oil, turmeric and red wine. Research says that they can improve cognitive function and memory. However, latest research says that blueberry can be the ultimate brain food! It is already in the super fruit category as it lowers the risk of cancer and heart disease. Alzheimer’s disease is becoming a common form of the much dreaded dementia. Blueberry is said to be loaded with antioxidants that prevents the disease. Presently, millions of people are suffering from Alzheimer’s disease and the number is expected to rise. Seeing the alarming rate at which Alzheimer’s is progressing, researchers have done two studies on humans.

In one study, the researchers chose adults above 68 years of age with mild cognitive impairment. It said to be a risk factor for Alzheimer’s. One group of people was given freeze-dried and powdered blueberry and another group was given a placebo for a period of 16 weeks. The results showed an improvement in brain function and cognitive performance in those who consumed the blueberry powder (that was equivalent to one cup of blueberries) when compared to others who were on a placebo. The group on blueberry powder had improved memory and their MRI scans showed an improvement in brain activity too!

Researchers feel that the power of blueberries lies in the flavonoids called anthocyanins. They have also shown improvements in animals.

Now, let us talk about the second study that was carried out. It had people in the age-group of 62 to 80 who felt that their memories were declining but did not have measured cognitive issues. They were divided into 4 groups. The groups were given blueberry powder, fish oil or a placebo.

The results of this second study were not as dynamic as that of the first study. There was a slightly better cognitive ability for the group who had blueberry powder or the one that had fish oil. However, with regard to memory there was only little improvement. The MRI scans of the participants on blueberry powder were not striking in particular. The chief reason behind this was that the participants of the study had less severe issues when compared to the participants of the first study.

This directly means that blueberries can be more effective in treating people already having cognitive impairments. The folks with minor memory issues may not get benefitted. In future studies, the researchers plan to rope in younger people.

You may also note that the study was funded by organizations like Wild Blueberries of North America, U.S. Highbush Blueberry Council and National Institute of Aging.

Anyway, blueberries have a lot to offer. It would be a good idea to include them in your daily diet plan. You can purchase frozen blueberries from the supermarket as getting them fresh in India is difficult.
