Breathlessness – How To Deal With It?

Have you ever been short of breath? Did you ever feel any kind of breathing difficulty? This difficulty in breathing is medically called dyspnoea. There can be a tight feeling in the chest and this can happen to anyone who is running to board a bus or trying to exert too much. However, it is essential that you visit the doctor if you have breathlessness because there might be an underlying problem.

Breathlessness – what is it?

When you have breathlessness, there is difficulty in breathing and you feel short of breath. Breathlessness or dyspnoea as it is known medically can happen suddenly or can be chronic. The reason behind it is that the body requires more oxygen than what is getting in. In order to let your lungs get oxygen-rich air, you need to breathe faster. It is from the lungs that oxygen enters the blood and is then pumped by the heart to each and every extremity of the body.

Who can get affected?

When you exercise a lot you can get short of breath particularly if you have a low fitness level and are overweight. If you happen to get it suddenly, there can be an underlying medical condition and you must get to the root of it.

Pneumonia affects both young kids and the elderly whereas asthma targets kids. Smokers are more likely to suffer from lung and heart ailments. All the above medical ailments can affect anyone and if there is severe breathlessness, you should consult the doctor immediately.

How to deal with chronic breathlessness?

You can deal with breathlessness with the following techniques:

1) Try doing paced breathing which refers to breathing in rhythm with your walking speed.

2) Breathe in deeply in a slow and relaxed manner.

3) Try doing controlled breathing

4) Choose comfortable positions while sitting and standing. Different positions might suit different people.

5) Keep things you need within your reach so that you don’t face any difficulty.

6) Be active but at the same time take rest when you are breathless.

Some ways to avoid breathlessness

Passive Smoke

You must try your best in finding out the underlying cause of your breathlessness and get treatment accordingly. If you smoke, it is extremely important that you kick the habit because smokers are more susceptible to breathing difficulties. Apart from that, you also need to ensure that your body weight is normal and you exercise regularly as obesity is one of the causes of breathlessness. If you weigh above normal, it is high time that you do something about it. You can take the help of a qualified dietician to lose weight as she or he will guide you with regard to your food intake, eating habits and workouts.

With a little care you can keep things under control.
