Can Popcorn Be A Healthy Snack?
What do you do when you head to the movie theatre? Buy yourself a large tub of popcorn, right? What do you do while watching a movie at home? You perhaps open a packet of processed popcorn and pop it and enjoy the flick with your family! After all what is the fun in watching a movie without a snack to munch on? Popcorn seems to be the all time favourite!
Well, anything processed is not good for you and all the extra calories in the synthetic fat loaded popcorn you buy at the theatre will lead to weight gain. Keeping everything aside, do you know that popcorn is one of the healthiest snack you can ever have? It is due to the polyphenol content in it and I am not talking about trans-fat loaded or processed popcorn!
Popcorn is healthy!
Popcorn is basically popped corn kernel. It is a whole grain and has all the benefits that whole grains offer. Popcorn is packed with minerals and vitamins such as vitamin A, vitamin E, vitamin K, B vitamins, iron, folate, potassium and zinc. It is low in calories, a 25 g cup has just 31 calories.
It has polyphenols that are a kind of chemical present in plant foods. They help in neutralizing free radicals that are known to cause damage to the body’s cells and result in several serious diseases. It can also speed up aging 🙁 and you don’t want that to happen, right? You will be surprised to learn that popcorn has the highest amount of polyphenols compared to other plant food including fruits. It is not just the polyphenol content that makes it healthy but also the fibre in it.
Stay away from processed or microwave popcorn
For any kind of food, the preparation and sourcing is essential. So, after reading about the benefits of popcorn don’t rush to the supermarket to buy several packets of processed popcorn. You know the name of the famous popcorn brand in India, do I need to mention it 😛 ? You need to avoid all that as they use flavouring to give the extra zing. The popcorn at the movies has synthetic fat in it and should be avoided.
What is the healthiest popcorn?
The healthiest popcorn is the one made in the traditional way. Make it on the gas stove or in the popcorn maker if you have one. Popcorn is damn cheap and can easily fit into your budget. Just get organic corn kernels from the store and you can enjoy lots of popcorn at home. Add in healthy fats like ghee or coconut oil if you like. After they are popped just sprinkle a bit of salt on top and you will have a healthy and delicious snack in front of you. You can add in a little bit of turmeric (if you using the stove method) as it is good for health and will also add a nice colour to your popcorn. Have popcorn whenever hunger strikes and you want to keep your calorie intake low!
However, keep one thing in mind that excess of everything is bad. So, don’t overdo the popcorn munching. When corn is not soaked or sprouted before cooking it has anti-nutrients in it that can affect your digestion if consumed in excess.
Take care and enjoy popcorn!
So, when made the right way popcorn is healthy!
