Can Thyroid And PCOD Patients Use Herbalife Products?
A reader recently asked whether a person suffering from thyroid problem and PCOD can consume Herbalife products. The answer to that is NO. Let us delve in deeper to know why?
The ‘soy’ present in Herbalife products are the main reason why they should be avoided by people suffering from thyroid and PCOD.
PCOD and soy
Though it is a controversial issue, let us discuss it. Soy and its effects are being studied in great detail. When it comes to PCOD, there are certain studies that say it can have a negative effect on a woman’s fertility. On the other hand another study on soy shows favourable results for PCOD. All these studies have been done on lab mice.
It is kind of unclear whether soy has a positive or negative effect on the fertility of women suffering with PCOD. It has been concluded after looking at all the data generated by various researches that those women who suffering from infertility or PCOD should limit their soy intake.
Thyroid problems and soy
Certain studies associate the intake of soy products with hypothyroidism. It is a health condition that many women with PCOS suffer from. The isoflavones present in soy are called genistein and diadzien. The isoflavones are known to be problematic where iodine intake is low. For your information, iodine is an essential mineral for the function of the thyroid. People who have a healthy diet along with sufficient iodine intake will not be affected by a little bit of soy products in their diet. Individuals who consume a poor or low calorie diet with insufficient amounts of iodine can face thyroid disturbances. If you happen to suffer from hypothyroid, you must limit your soy intake.
Herbalife products-the ingredients
So, having said that soy has to be limited by those who suffer from PCOD and hypothyroidism, let us have a look at what Herbalife products actually contain.
The products of Herbalife are not even close to being healthy. They contain GMO soy as already mentioned above along with corn, canola and cottonseed. Artificial sweeteners such as sucralose are added to the products. It has Monosodium glutamate (MSG). They have highly processed hydrogenated and trans fat present in them. There is the presence of artificial colours and flavours too. There are other unhealthy stuff like margarine and corn syrup.
From no angle the above product ingredients seem to be healthy! You already read about soy. Sucralose (an artificial sweetener) is another devil that destroys gut flora affecting immunity of the body. Trans fat is bad for your body. Artificial colours and flavours don’t add to anybody’s health. You are most probably going to spoil your health by consuming the Herbalife products .
Not just for PCOD and thyroid patients but even for the otherwise healthy people the range of herbalife products are not good.
Try to lose weight the healthy way instead of falling for such gimmicks. Eating clean, steering clear of junk food and working out religiously will give you the desired results.
