Coffee enema is an alternative treatment to cleanse the colon, which involves introducing a mixture of coffee and water into the colon by way of rectum.

People suggest that coffee enema can help in detoxing the body and help in clearing harmful toxins from the body. Coffee enema involves single time infusion of water,which then sits on the lower part of the colon for a short time period before being released. Coffee enemas are being performed by individuals at their homes.

Benefits of Coffee Enema

Coffee enema is considered helpful in health issues like;

  • Chronic pain

  • Constipation

  • Depression

  • Fatigue

  • Intestinal parasites

  • Yeast overgrowth

In addition to these, coffee enemas help;

  • boost mood
  • reduce stress
  • increase energy levels

  • promote sounder sleep

Coffee enema also helps in prevention of cancer. In this, it is used as a part of Gerson Therapy.

Despite its popularity, coffee enema has been explored very less in scientific studies. A small study published in Human and Experimental Toxicology in 2012 claims that coffee enema can increase the body’s production of glutathione – a compound with antioxidant properties known to stimulate the excretion of bile. It is a substance which is critical in the process of digestion.

Is Coffee Enema Detox Safe!

Ideally, there is absolutely no need to undergo any kind of cleanse or detox, unless one has been poisoned. Our body is an expert at getting rid of toxins no matter what we eat. The best way to detox the body is to limit processed, high-fat, and sugary foods.

There have been a number of cases of people suffering from vomiting, diarrhea, overall weakness, dizziness, severe abdominal pain, and even renal failure due to adverse effects of colonics. It can lead to many complications like dehydration, pleural, infections, sepsis, salmonella, colitis, internal burns, perforation of the walls of the intestine, electrolyte imbalance, brain abscess, heart failure, and even death.

Coffee enema may be harmful to people with abdominal hernia, blood vessel disease, congestive heart failure, Crohn’s disease, diverticulitis, gastrointestinal cancer, intestinal tumors, severe anaemia, hemorrhoids, ulcerative colitis.

If coffee enema is combined with fasting, the risk of its side effects increases. In addition, pregnant or nursing women, children, and people who have undergone colonal surgery should not do coffee enema. It is believed that Coffee enema, like coffee, can result into caffeine dependance.

My Take

Enema might be a good and a safe solution for people who want an effective treatment for occasional constipation. It is very cheap, easy and safe to use at home as long as it is done with water. There may be some discomfort, but water enema generally do not have side effects.

On the other hand, if it is being used to ‘detoxify’ the colon-STOP. The human body is capable of detoxifying itself in the liver. It just involves healthy eating habits and no coffee enemas. Coffee enema can be very dangerous and can damage our body. There has been no proper research on this. And still if one wants to try it, consulting a doctor is very important.
