5 Different Ways Of Using Herbs

There are a countless number of herbs on our planet with different health benefits to offer. There is no doubt that Mother Nature has showered us with blessings in the form of herbs. In India herbs have a special place as they are used in Ayurveda for treating ailments.

Right from the health of the digestive system to the health of your skin and hair, everything is taken care of with the help of herbs. They can either be included in your everyday diet or can be applied externally. Whatever technique you apply, it is essential to extract the maximum benefits out of it.

1) Herbs in your food

You can add herbs to salads, salad dressings, soups and other dishes. This is the best way of absorbing the nutrients present in the herbs. The commonly used herbs are rosemary, thyme and basil. They are added to food to enhance flavour and fragrance of the dishes. It is always better to break herbs with hands instead of chopping them. Breaking with hands retains the maximum amount of flavour and the health benefits of the herbs.

2) Herbal bath

You must have heard about herbal baths. It is common in spas where they make you soak in a bath tub full of herbs. Now, it is not possible to do the same at home as most of us don’t have a bath tub. However, you can still enjoy the benefits of herbs like neem by adding them to your bucket of bathing water. You can also heat water with herbs and use that for bathing as it treats skin infections and wards off body odour. It is common to use eucalyptus, lavender, basil and sage in herbal baths.

3) Herbal steam

This one is done quite commonly by people suffering from cough and cold. To hot water peppermint or eucalyptus is added. It not just clears blockage because of mucus but also helps promote healing. You can add chamomile, lavender, neem or leaves of green tea to the hot water and take facial steam. It helps the skin in absorbing maximum health benefits from the herbs.

4) Poultice or compress

A poultice or compress is made by wrapping herbs crushed into a coarse paste in a cotton or muslin cloth and tying it. This poultice or compress can then be heated and applied to the affected area to get relief and relaxation. You can even apply the the thick paste of herbs to wounds directly and cover it with a hot piece of cotton cloth. Herbs like sage, plantain and garlic are used to relieve pain in the muscle and nerves or to heal boils and ulcers.

5) Packs or lotions

Herbs are crushed to make a paste and added to lotions and creams. Herbs are also used as a face pack for treating skin problems like acne and pimples. Usually a base such as olive or coconut oil is used to steep the paste of the herb and then applied to the skin and hair. For the face and skin wheat germ, curry leaves, lavender, fresh tea leaves and rose petals are used.
