Diseases You Can Suffer From If You Are Obese. Find Out!
Hello All!
Obesity is a grave issue and it is affecting adults as well as children. Thanks to all the unhealthy lifestyle we lead these days! Now you may ask how do you know that you are obese? You are called obese when you weight at least 20% more than what is called the right weight for your height.
Obesity is an epidemic and not just that, it can result in many other serious health conditions. Here is a closer look at the 7 conditions that are linked to obesity:
Heart disease and stroke
High blood pressure and high cholesterol can be the outcome of extra weight. Both the conditions increase the risk of heart disease and stroke. The great news is that losing even a small amount of weight can help in reducing the risk of developing both the conditions. By choosing 5-10% of your weight you can lower your chance of suffering from heart disease. Isn’t it a good reason to shed excess weight?
Type 2 diabetes
Have you noted that most people with type 2 diabetes are obese or overweight. Your risk of developing type 2 diabetes reduces significantly by losing weight, having a balanced diet, sleeping right and exercising sufficiently. If you already suffer from type 2 diabetes, losing weight and staying physically active can help control the levels of blood sugar. Becoming active also helps reduce your need for diabetes medicines.
Cancer
Colon cancer, breast cancer (after menopause), cancer of the endometrium (uterus lining), cancer of the kidney and esophagus are related to obesity. Certain studies have also reported the link between obesity and cancers of pancreas, ovaries and gallbladder. Pretty scary!
Gallbladder Disease
If you happen to be overweight, gallbladder disease and gallstones are common. However, ironically, rapid weight loss can make you more susceptible to the diseases of the gall bladder. It is advisable to lose weight at the rate of half a kilo a week to avoid ending up with gallstones.
Osteoarthritis
Osteoarthritis is a joint problem that affects the hip, knee or back. When you carry extra pounds, it places too much of pressure on these joints and wears away the tissue that cushions the joints. Weight loss can reduce stress on the knees, hips, lower back thereby improving symptoms of osteoarthritis.
Gout
Gout affects the joints. It occurs when you have too much of uric acid in your blood. The extra uric acid can form crystals that get deposited in the joints. Gout is more prevalent in overweight people. The more weight you carry around, the more the chances you have to get gout.
Sleep apnea
Obesity can lead to a breathing condition called sleep apnea. This condition makes a person snore heavily and also stop breathing briefly during sleep. Sleep apnea can cause daytime sleepiness also making heart disease and stroke more likely. When you lose weight, this condition gets alright.
The motive of this post is not to scare you but to make you aware. Not all who are obese will have the above mentioned diseases. The risk increases if you have a family history of the health conditions mentioned. It also matters where your weight lies. If you are apple shaped with your weight around your stomach, it may be riskier than a pear shaped body when your weight is around the hips and buttocks.
