The esophagus is the connecting tube between the throat and stomach. An esophageal ulcer is a type of peptic ulcer that is located in the lower part of the esophagus, where the esophagus and the stomach meet.

The cause of peptic ulcer is a bacterium called Helicobacter pylori. The erosion caused by the stomach acid can however be a cause to this. The medical treatments are available and along with lifestyle changes, this can cured completely.

Symptoms of Esophageal Ulcers:

When does one come to know about this disease? Well, there are visible symptoms like burning pain in the chest along with the ones that include:

  • Nausea
  • Indigestion
  • Bloating
  • Lack of appetite
  • Difficulty in swallowing
  • Dry cough
  • Vomiting

Causes of Esophageal Ulcers:

Earlier it was believed that the consumption of spicy food or even stress is the root cause, however this is not true, these worsen the case but are solely not responsible.

  • The bacteria commonly known as H.Pylori is what causes esophageal ulcers. This bacteria is responsible for making the damage to the mucosal lining of the esophagus.
  • A chronic condition, Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) also can cause esophageal ulcers. People who suffer from GERD often suffer from acid reflux. That happens when the stomach content moves back to the esophagus.
  • Smoking, alcohol, use of certain drugs like ibuprofen can also damage the lining of the esophagus leading to formation of esophageal ulcers.
  • Certain pills such as potassium, if not taken with sufficient water can cause such ulcers.

Treatment and Recovery Tips:

If the ulcer is caused by the bacteria, then the bacteria killing pills can be successful in treatment. If the reason is the medication, so it’s preferred to stop the consumption of the NSAIDS. Antifungal or Antibacterial medicines can also be prescribed depending on the cause of the medicine.

The visible effects of the treatment start reducing the symptoms, however proper course of the medication should be completed along with sufficient amount of water.

Certain lifestyle changes should also be observed, like:

  • Reducing stress
  • Sufficient amount of sleep
  • Consumption of fruits
  • Increased frequency of meals with lesser quantity
  • Avoiding alcohol
  • No smoking
  • Adequate amount of water consumption

Diet to heal for Esophageal Ulcer:

Along with the medication, the doctors also suggest to make changes in the diet plans. This basically includes

  • Increasing consumption of fiber, fruits and vegetables.
  • Some helpful food recommendations are oats, whole grains, nuts, fruits, vegetables, flax seeds etc.

On the other hand, some food items should be strictly avoided, like,

  • coffee, soda, chocolate, alcohol, citrus fruits, spicy food, oily, greasy, fried items.

Esophageal ulcers forming in the junction of the stomach and the esophagus can be a result of the bacterial infection. It can be healed with proper medication, lifestyle changes.
