Alkaline diet is also called alkaline ash diet or alkaline acid diet. It is a favourite amongst Hollywood celebs. Let us see what it is all about!

The diet’s promise

It promises weight loss and wards off arthritis and cancer. The logic used is that certain foods like meat, refined sugar, wheat and other processed stuff cause the production of acid in the body, which is considered to be bad for health.

On the other hand, eating foods that make your body alkaline can help you shed kilos and protect you from arthritis and cancer.

What is allowed and what is not!

Foods that are allowed are fruits and veggies, tofu, soybeans, nuts, legumes and seeds as they are known to be alkaline promoting.

Foods that are not allowed are dairy, eggs, meat, grains, processed stuff like canned food and packaged snacks as they are acidic. Even alcohol and caffeine is not allowed.

Restriction and preferences

The diet is completely vegetarian and works well for vegans as it does not include dairy. The diet is also gluten free as wheat is not allowed. But do check labels because gluten can be in other foods too!

Does the diet work?

It might work but not for the reasons it is based on!

Let us go back to chemistry class. A pH level is a measure of how acidic or alkaline something is. A pH of 0 means that the substance is totally acidic and pH of 14 means that it is completely alkaline. A pH of 7 is neutral. The pH levels vary all over the body. The blood is slightly alkaline as it has a pH between 7.35 and 7.45. The stomach is very acidic as it has a pH of 3.5 or below because it needs to break down food. The pH of the urine changes based on what you eat and that is how the body keeps the level of pH in the blood steady.

The alkaline diet claims that it helps the body maintain the blood’s pH level. This is not true as anything you eat will not substantially change the pH of your blood. It is the body that works to keep the level constant.

The foods you eat when on the alkaline diet are good for you and will help support weight loss that too in a healthy way. Eating lots of fruits and veggies, and saying no to sugar, alcohol and processed junk is a healthy weight loss advice.

As to the claims of warding of certain health conditions, there are some early proof that a diet low in acid producing foods such as meat, cheese and bread and high in fresh fruits and veggies can keep bones and muscles healthy, prevent formation of kidney stones, improves heart health and functioning of the brain. It also reduces back pain and wards off type 2 diabetes. However, researchers are not sure about most of the claims yet.

The bottom line

The diet has its pros but it is also true that the diet is strict, bans foods that are a part of a healthy eating plan. Moreover, there is no research that proves that pH affects your weight! So, it can be regarded as a fad diet!
