Today I am here to discuss food addiction. Sounds funny right? How can food be addictive? Bitter it may be but this is the truth. I know many of you girls out there are trying hard to lose weight. Are you not able to give up on certain unhealthy foods? The reason can be food addiction.

Different types of foods are known to have different effects on the brain and certain foods (junk food mainly) can cause food addiction.

What is food addiction?                    

Just like how drug addicts are addicted to drugs, a person is addicted to junk food. Most of the symptoms in both the cases are identical. Food addiction is very similar to binge eating disorder, compulsive overeating and bulimia( an eating disorder).

The working is as follows:

Foods that are categorized as junk have a powerful effect on certain areas in the brain. This also involves neurotransmitters in the brain like dopamine. The brain’s biochemistry is sort of hijacked by dopamine’s signal.

What are the symptoms of food addiction ?

  • After feeling full and having eaten a nutritious meal, you recurrently get cravings for certain foods.
  • You eat more than what you had planned to when you start eating a food you were craving.
  • You at times eat to the extent of feeling excessively stuffed when you eat a food you were craving.
  • You find yourself eating the same food that you were feeling guilty about eating a while back.
  • In your head you sometimes make excuses about why you should be eating something that you are craving.
  • You have been unsuccessful in spite of repeatedly trying to quit eating or setting rules about certain foods.
  • You often tend to hide your intake of unhealthy or junk food from others.
  • Despite knowing that the junk food is causing you physical harm (including weight gain), you are unable to control your intake of that food.

Why food addiction is a serious problem ?

Food addiction is known to cause the following health problems:

  • Obesity
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Heart disease
  • Cancer
  • Alzheimer’s
  • Arthritis
  • Depression

Apart from the above said diseases it hurts one’s self-esteem and causes unhappiness.

How to overcome food addiction ?

If you are not able to give up on those foods write down the pros and cons of leaving them on a piece of paper. It will make your decision easier.

Next, when you have set your mind on completely stopping the consumption of that food, prepare yourself and set a date.

While preparing yourself:

  1. Jot down the foods you crave. These are the trigger foods you need to avoid.
  2. Write down the names of hotels that serve healthy food.
  3. Think about healthy foods you are going to eat.

Now set a date and from that date onwards don’t touch the addictive foods again.

There can be relapses but keep trying. When all your attempts to overcome your addiction fail, it is advisable to seek professional help from a psychologist or psychiatrist.

Do something about your food addiction and don’t leave it just like that.
