Foods For Sun Protection
Are you finding it difficult to deal with all the sun exposure? Here in India you get ample sunshine all round the year! Always thinking about which sunscreen to use? If I say that food can do wonders when it comes to sun protection, will you believe me? It may sound clichéd but we are what we eat. Foods consumed by us have a huge impact on how the skin protects itself from the sun. You can build your very own sun protection by eating certain fruits and vegetables.
Here is a list of foods for sun protection
1) Add cruciferous vegetables to your diet
Cruciferous vegetables include cauliflower, broccoli and kale. They are well known for their high concentration of an antioxidant called sulphoraphane that helps in protecting the body from UV radiation. Cauliflower is also a great source of a compound that is said to be a natural photoprotective (protects from light). So, it would be great if you rev up your intake of these veggies.
2) Consume more citrus fruits
You can make your bottle of water tastier by adding in slices of citrus fruits like lime, lemon and oranges. They are well known for the vitamin C that they provide. Vitamin C is a great antioxidant that fights away free radicals. This keeps the skin healthy and free of cancer.
3) Include papaya, watermelon, and apricot in your diet
Just dice up some papaya, watermelon, and apricot and put them in a bowl along with pomegranate seeds. With a squeeze of a citrus fruit, you have a strong army right in front of you. Apart from being rich in vitamin C, orange coloured fruits have high amounts of carotenoids. These plant compounds bring down the effects of UVB radiation. Watermelon has lycopene in it that prevents sun-burn and skin cancer. Pomegranate seeds help in strengthening the upper layer of the skin. For additional protection and some crunch to the salad you can include some chia seeds that are great sources of omega 3s.
4) Consume spirulina
When you talk of sun protection, spirulina cannot be missed out. It has an antioxidant called astaxanthin, a potent plant chemical that is 500 times more powerful than vitamin E! It protects the skin and the eyes from the harmful UV rays. You can mix it up in your green smoothie or juice.
5) Have some dark chocolate daily!
The darker the chocolate the better, yes, you know that. But try to stick to the one with at least 70% cocoa. Are you aware of the fact that dark chocolate has 4 times the amount of antioxidants present in green tea? It would be better to stay on a look out for organic chocolate of good-quality.
