What is Guggul ?

Guggul is a herbal remedy and is extracted from gum resin of Commiphora mukul tree. This tree is found in India, Middle East and Africa. Guggul is also called Indian Bedellium or Guggulu. Guggul has medicinal properties and hence has been used for ages in Ayurvedic medicines in India to cure various diseases.

How Guggul helps in weight loss ?

Guggul does have biological effects due to which you can shed weight.  Some of the ways Guggul helps in weight loss are –

  • It causes natural death of fat cells in the body.

  • It stimulates thyroid too.

Guggul has cholesterol reducing, anti-angiogenic and anti-tumor properties as per research done by Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.  Guggul is also known to influence estrogen and pregnane. Researches are still going on Guggul to have more clinical evidence of its effectiveness on weight loss. . In the year 2004, American Journal of Clinical Nutrition stated that with Guggul’s oral intake of 750mg/day , there was no noteworthy weight loss.

Another research was carried out at SPARC – Swami Prakashananda and Ayurveda Research Centre  in India. This research showed that Guggul consumption with diet and exercise results in weight loss. Out of 36 people, 7 lost more than 22 pounds in a month !

Dosage and side effects

Ayurvedic practitioners suggest 2-4 grams Guggul per day for weight loss. It must be taken with hot water.

Some mild side effects are known as a result of Guggul consumption. These are nausea, upset stomach, rash, skin allergy.
