Habits That Hurt Your Brain
The brain is the master of the body and it is your duty to take good care of it. But how? You see, there are a few things that most of us do without realizing that it takes a toll on the brain. Here is a list of some of the bad habits that hurt your brain.
1) Missing out on sleep
Do you sleep less? Lack of sleep is said to cause dementia, including Alzheimer’s and you don’t want that to happen to you at any cost! You should have regular sleeping hours. If you have trouble falling asleep, you should start avoiding caffeine, alcohol and your exposure to electronic gadgets in the evening. It would be great if you can start a bedtime ritual that soothes you.
2) Spending too much time alone
We humans are hard-wired to be social. No, I am not talking about the number of facebook friends you have. You need a sense of real connection. People who have even a tiny social circle with just a few close buddies are a lot happier and productive. They also have lesser chances of suffering from brain decline and Alzheimer’s. If you feel lonely, invite friends over and start playing outdoor or indoor sports that involve people.
3) Eating too much of junk food
Areas of the brain that are linked to learning, memory and mental health are smaller in individuals who eat lots of burgers, chips and soft drinks. On the other hand, people who consume berries, whole grains, nuts and leafy greens have a well preserved brain function and a slow mental decline. So, the next time you feel like munching on chips, try to get your hands on some nuts.
4) Keeping your headphones too loud
When you keep your headphones on full volume, you can damage your hearing permanently in just 30 mins. Hearing loss in the elderly is associated with brain problems like Alzheimer’s and brain tissue loss. This is because the human brain has to work so hard to understand what is being said that it cannot store what has been heard to memory. Turn the volume down and don’t listen for more than a few hours at a time.
5) Not moving enough
If you don’t exercise regularly, your chances of suffering from dementia are higher. There is an increased risk of diabetes, heart disease and high BP. And all of these may be linked with Alzheimer’s. It does not mean that you have to start running marathons! Half an hour in the garden or a brisk walk in your neighbourhood will suffice. You should do this at least 3 days a week.
Smoking can shrink your brain and that is not right. It leads to poor memory and makes you two times more likely to land up with dementia, including Alzheimer’s. Smoking is also closely linked with heart disease, stroke, diabetes and high BP.
Even if you are eating the right kind of food, too much of it can affect your brain. The brain may be unable to build a strong network connection that helps you think and remember. Overeating can make your overweight and can lead to diabetes, heart disease and high BP; all linked to brain problems and Alzheimer’s.
