Post a shower you latehr on bod lotion, use a deodorant, apply face cream, use makeup and then move ahead with hair styling products… a very long list! How will you react if I say that there are Harmful Chemicals In Personal Care Products?
Don’t panic, not all of these products are toxic but most of them are said to contain harmful chemical compounds like parabens, dioxins, and phthalates. Using products with these chemicals add up with time and it is immensely important for you to watch what you are using.
Bar soap may appear to be a simple product and a must for bathing but do you know that it has harmful ingredients. The lather effect it gives is made possible by a chemical called SLS (sodium laureth sulfate) which commonly causes irritation in the eyes, skin and lungs. This is why the eyes hurt when soap gets into them. The other ingredients to watch out for are parabens, triclosan and fragrance. Fragrance is a blanket term that describes chemicals not present on the label.
Instead of commercial beauty soaps, go in for soaps that are made with natural ingredients such as shea butter, cocoa butter, coconut oil, and has the fragrance of essential oils. In short, go in for traditionally made soaps.
Body lotion is a great way to maintain healthy skin all round the year. However, it is essential to pay close attention to its ingredients. Watch out for coal tar which is a lotion-thickening ingredient linked to cancer. Also look for parabens, butylated compounds and fragrance. Choose body lotion that are made out of natural butters and oils.
Many people feel that when a shampoo lathers it really works well. However, the lather indicates that 2 harmful chemicals are present in the product namely, sodium laureth sulfate and 1,4-dioxin. They are toxic and have to be avoided. Also look for PEG (Polyethylene glycol), colourants, fragrance, and potassium sorbate. There are many shampoos out in the market that don’t have these ingredients. If possible switch to herbal powders instead of liquid shampoos. You simply need to make a paste of it and apply it on your scalp and hair. You can save money and go green too!
Deodorants contain fragrance, tricolsan, propylene glycol, phthalates, and parabens. Now it may be difficult to stay without a deodorant! However, you can try the natural alternatives available in the market that are as effective as the chemical stuff. Replace traditional deos with ones that use coconut oil, shea butter, baking soda, arrowroot powder and cocoa butter.
Are you ready to chuck out the toxins from your personal care products or not? You need to take care of your health and remember the mantra of going natural.
