Vinegar is a household name. It is being used in the kitchen for centuries. In my home it used most often to make paneer (cottage cheese). Apart from culinary uses it is also used as a remedy for certain health problems.

Apple Cider Vinegar is the most popularly used vinegar. It has a lot of health benefits to offer. Take a look.

1) Vinegar is antimicrobial and can kill some types of bacteria

Acetic acid is the active ingredient in vinegar. This makes it able to kill disease causing microbes including bacteria. Vinegar is used as a food preservative too. As per studies it inhibits the growth of microbes (bacteria) and it thus prevents the microbes from spoiling the food. That is why vinegar is added to pickles so that they don’t get spoiled. It is a natural preservative of food.

2) It helps lower blood sugar levels


Vinegar has particularly been found beneficial in helping patients suffering from type 2 diabetes and anyone with high sugar levels. Having high blood sugar levels can lead to several serious illnesses. There are studies to back the fact that vinegar can reduce blood sugar after meals and increase insulin sensitivity.

Insulin is the hormone secreted by the pancreas that is needed by the body’s cells to let glucose (sugar) enter them for energy generation. It is the body’s inability to provide sufficient insulin or insulin resistance that leads to high blood sugar and eventually diabetes.

3) It helps in weight loss

Vinegar has been found to increase the feeling of fullness and that makes you consume lesser calories. Eating lesser calories directly means loss of weight. By fewer calories I mean 200-275 calories for the whole day. It is low in calories too! One table spoon of vinegar has just three calories. Vinegar would just aid weight loss; don’t expect it to do miracles on its own. You can’t find phenomenal difference in your weight by just adding an ingredient to your food. But yes, it may be included as a part of a healthy life style and you may eventually lose weight by consuming fewer calories.

Vinegar has been promising for heart health as per study done on rats. But that doesn’t hold good for humans, right? 😉 A study done on women has shown that including vinegar in your salad dressing can reduce the risk of heart disease.

How to include vinegar in your diet

We Indians don’t use vinegar with that much zeal as people abroad do but you can always try and incorporate vinegar in your diet.

  • Drizzle a bit of vinegar on your salad as a salad dressing with herbs and spices to add more zing.
  • Apple cider vinegar being tangy and fruity in flavour can be added to chutneys and sauces.
  • The vinegar is also used to marinate meats and to make them tender.
  • It can be used as a preservative to preserve food.
  • Apple cider vinegar can replace lemon in dishes.
