The main problem most of us have with healthy and natural foods is that they get spoiled easily. Frequent visits to the grocery store to get fresh stuff are annoying. Moreover, it is a challenge to carry healthy food around when you are travelling and don’t have a fridge. However, there are a lot of healthy foods that can be stored for a long time period without getting spoiled. Have a look at healthy foods that do not spoil easily!
Nuts are a wonderful source of protein, fat as well as fibre. You have a huge variety when it comes to choosing your nuts. Most of them last for about a year and it can be even longer if they are frozen.
2) Dried grains
Grains can be stored for years when kept in a dry and tightly sealed container. Some people buy grains for the whole year and store it at home!
When stored in a cool and dry place, dark chocolate can last up to 4-6 months after the ‘best use before’ date on the label. Apart from being delicious, it is a great source of fibre, magnesium and other essential nutrients.
4) Dried fruit
It may be difficult to store grapes for long but you can always store raisins! This is because the process of dehydration that prevents the fruit from getting spoilt. Dried fruit is packed with various nutrients including fibre. You can carry them along with you anywhere!
5) Coconut milk (canned)
Coconut has high saturated fat content and this type of fat is stable and does not go rancid easily. A can of coconut milk that is sealed properly can stay good for over a year.
6) Dried beans
Great source of protein, dried beans can be stored for a long time period. Their moisture content is naturally low that makes them last for years. They are highly nutritious too as they have several essential nutrients.
Protein powders such as whey protein is easy to store and can last a good 5 years! Add it to your shakes and smoothies for a extra protein punch!
Honey is known to be a natural antibiotic due to its high sugar content and low moisture content. It can be kept for long when kept in hygienic conditions. Honey is better option than refined sugar if you want to use it as a sweetener.
Ghee is found in every Indian kitchen. It is clarified butter that has all non-fat solids removed. As it mostly consists of saturated fats, it can be kept at room temperature for a long time when sealed properly.
10) Coconut oil
Just like ghee, coconut oil is high in saturated fat and can be kept on the shelf at room temperature for years.
Even extra virgin olive oil can be kept for more than a year when stored in a dark and cool place. You are already aware of its health benefits.
Seeds like flax, chia seeds, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds provide you with a lot of essential nutrients. When stored right they can be kept for long.
13) Dried herbs and spices
Dried herbs and spices have their moisture removed. They are just awesome foods that you can store for really long periods. As long as you keep them dry, they will last for many years.
