We all know, caffeine is a stimulant that can speed up the central nervous system. Caffeine stimulates the brain and can change the way people feel and act. Many people use coffee to help wake themselves up in the morning, relieve tiredness, and improve concentration and focus.

Diabetes affects how the body uses sugar (glucose). Glucose is required by the body for energy. Insulin which is present in the blood helps absorb glucose. People with diabetes have an excess amount of glucose, either because the pancreas does not create enough insulin, or the body does not use insulin properly. It is a serious health problem.
A study concluded that people who increase the amount of coffee by more than one cup per day had an 11% lower risk of type 2 diabetes than the ones who made no change. It also proved that people reducing their coffee intake had increased their risk by 17%. Now that is interesting, Isn’t it?

Coffee also contains minerals like magnesium and chromium that can help lower the risk of type 2 diabetes. The blend of ingredients can also help to improve insulin sensitivity.
However, other research has linked coffee and caffeine to an increase in blood sugar levels and insulin resistance. In some cases, there may also be a negative impact.
A study examined the effects of different amounts of coffee on blood sugar and insulin concentration of health volunteers. In this study, 33 volunteers participated and each consumed 200 milliliters of coffee each morning. Their blood samples were tested for blood sugar and insulin levels. The results showed that coffee has a short-term effect on blood sugar and insulin concentrations. It also reported that people with diabetes should exercise regularly.

Studies show that the effect of high levels of caffeine may vary among people. Though, water is the best drink for people with diabetes, yet if they choose to drink coffee, they should be sure about keeping an eye on their blood sugar levels.
It is reported that upto 400 mg caffeine is okay but more than 500 milligrams of caffeine a day can cause side effects, which include:
- Stomach upset
- Fast heartbeat
- Muscle tremors
So it will be correct to say that the best thing for diabetes to do is not to rely on caffeine for energy. Instead, people should follow a healthy diet and lifestyle and keep an eye on their blood sugar levels.
