Mom: It is time for dinner!
You: So early! Nooooooo, I am watching my favourite cartoon show!
Mom: No more cartoons! Finish up your dinner. You need to sleep after that!
You: Oh no! 🙁
Those were the days when you used to eat your dinner early and then retire to bed. Have you ever wondered why your elders used to ask you to eat the last meal of the day early and then go off to sleep? One reason can be that you needed to get up early for school the next morning. But there was another solid reason, and that was the health benefits of having an early dinner. Unfortunately, over the years, due to our busy schedules we have forgotten this good habit.
What does Ayurveda have to say?
Principles of Ayurveda say that the human body is very much affected by the cycles of nature and sunlight. In Ayurveda, ‘ratri’ is a period that starts one hour after sunset. The period ratri is divided into 4 phases and eating dinner in the first phase of ratricharya is recommended to keep the body’s cycle in sync with the nature’s cycle. Only when your body is in sync with nature, you will be able to keep diseases at bay and be able to lead a healthy life.
How Does Eating A Late Dinner Affect You?
It leads to obesity
Ideally, dinner is the day’s last meal, unless you are a mid-night snacker! As the day reaches its end, the body’s processes and metabolism slows down. So, if you happen to have a late dinner, the food will not be converted into energy. It will instead get stored as fat in your body and will lead to weight gain. Now, you don’t want that to happen, isn’t it? So, to prevent piling up of kilos, you need to make sure that you have an early dinner.
Gastrointestinal problems get increased
People who usually have a late dinner suffer from acidity, heart burn, bloating and other digestive problems. This happens because the time gap between dinner and bed-time reduces. When you lie down on the bed, the acid of the stomach gets refluxed to the food pipe, causing uneasiness. On the other hand, if you eat early, the food gets processed by the digestive system well before your bed time, reducing the chances of gastrointestinal problems.
Affects quality of sleep
Your sleep cycle can get seriously affected because of late dinner as your digestion becomes poor. You may have acidity and heart burn that will wake you up often during the nights. Along with food you will drink water too; your water consumption during late night can affect the quality of your sleep as you will visit the washroom more frequently. In order to get a good nights’ sleep, you need to have your dinner early.
Doesn’t re-energize your system
Your brain and other body organs get sufficient time to concentrate on re-energizing themselves for the next day when you have an early dinner. When you have a late dinner, the organs of your body are forced to carry out the functions of digestion, absorption and assimilation.
It makes you sluggish
Your biological clock is programmed in such a way that it depends on the pattern of sunrise and sunset. You will get sluggish the day after you have a late dinner. When you allow the body to work the way it is programmed, you won’t feel tired and lethargic the next morning.
Make sure that you eat an early dinner at the same time every day to keep yourself fit. And talking about late night dinner parties, they can’t be completely avoided. You should have a light meal at sunset and then step out for your night out!
